Russia on Monday issued its latest rebuke of Israeli airstrikes aimed at curbing Iran’s military build-up in Syria.

“We strongly condemn such irresponsible actions that violate the sovereignty of Syria and the basic norms of international law, and we demand their unconditional cessation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, according to Reuters.

On Saturday, Syria accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes against targets south of the coastal city of Tartus. Two people were wounded in the strikes, which caused “massive material damage,” according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

According to Israeli media reports, the strikes targeted advanced air defense systems that had been smuggled into Syria by Iran. These systems would have threatened Israeli aircraft operating along the Syrian coastline, according to the reports.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Syrian air defenses “did not appear to have been deployed” during the strike on Shabbos.

Russia last month expressed “serious concern” to Israel’s ambassador over airstrikes on June 10 that damaged runways at Damascus International Airport.

In February, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “The continuing Israeli strikes on targets in Syria are a major concern. They constitute a gross violation of Syrian sovereignty and are capable of triggering a rapid escalation of the situation.”

  1. The foreign ministry of Count Dracula on Monday condemned a group of hikers who recently swatted dozens of blood sucking mosquitos.
“We strongly condemn such irresponsible acts of mosquito swatting that violate not only the sovereignty of this beloved blood sucking community but also the basic norms of vampirical law, and we demand the unconditional cessation of these mosquito swats,” the foreign ministry of Count Dracula said in comments about the July 2 swats.

  2. In other words, they’re criticizing Lapid for not keeping his mouth shut about the Russia Ukraine conflict, and jumping onto the bandwagon to criticize Russia when it was socially improper to remain silent. He cracked under the conformity pressure. At this point, the world and headlines have moved on to the next story and forgotten Ukraine (which is being decimated), but Russia remembers Lapid’s condemnations, and is now reciprocating. I hope the couple of minutes of fitting in instead of remaining embarrassingly quiet and sticking with empty neutral platitudes were worth it.

    • Well said!

Israel enjoyed virtually no feedback for years as they took day trips into Syrian territory a couple of times a month, sometimes dropping bombs right near Russian bases in the region (indicating prior coordination).

The minute they opened their loud mouths, Russia’s initial response was to recognize the Golan Heights as part of Syria. Now every time Israel wants to bomb something in Syria, it no longer goes unnoticed.

Incompetent diplomacy has consequences. A Foreign Minister/Secretary of State is a tough position. This is part of the reason imo that Netanyahu kept the FM role to himself, to prevent any mishaps in the delicate game of diplomacy.

    • Zionism (godless land-based nationalist people and faith) is the polar opposite of Judaism (G-d-based and Torah-based faith and people). Therefore, it would be absurd to expect a Zionist to follow anything like Pirkei Avos and the rest.

(By the way, the proper quote is “…ela…”, not “yoser mi…”, as I recall.)
