Kamala Harris sought to calm the fears of a pregnant woman who worried about raising a baby boy in what she described as the Trump era, once again leaning on her oft-used line about the “children of the community,” Fox News reports.
“Part of how I was raised to think about things was that the children of the community are our children of the community. And we all have some, I think, responsibility — you can call it a moral responsibility, you can think of it in different ways — but to be invested in their well-being and success,” Harris remarked Wednesday night at The Town Hall theater in Midtown Manhattan.
Her appearance in New York marked the official launch of her book tour for 107 Days, a memoir reflecting on her 2024 presidential campaign after Joe Biden exited the race amid intensifying doubts over his cognitive health.
During the program, Harris fielded just a small number of audience questions. One came from a mother, nine months pregnant, who said she was worried about how to raise her son with integrity and a “moral compass” in “this current political climate.”
In her reply, Harris told the woman that she would guide her child to be “strong” and that this strength would one day help him grow into a “role model.”
“To teach that our own children, that that is the way that we expect that they will live, which is to see the connection between themselves and others, to see the interdependence between themselves and others, and to have a sense of understanding that it’s a sign of strength to lift other people up,” Harris elaborated.
She then contrasted that philosophy with President Donald Trump’s approach, criticizing his idea of power.
“I used to talk about it a lot in those 107 days, which is this perverse notion that is absolutely being pushed by this guy in the White House, which is to suggest that the measure of strength is based on who you beat down,” she said. “Instead, what I think everyone here understands, which is the true measure of strength, is based on who you lift up.”
Harris expressed optimism for the future of the unborn child, praising the mother’s values.
“You’re going to teach him to be strong in every way that is important, and he will be a role model,” she added. “And we are very, very excited for the future of that child.”
The phrase “the children of the community are the children of the community” has been a recurring theme in Harris’ speeches, both during her vice presidency and her presidential run.
That wording has drawn ridicule from conservatives and commentators, many of whom derided it as another of her “word salads.” In September 2024, critics mocked her for linking the line to the issue of inflation.
“I grew up understanding the children of the community are the children of the community, and we should all have a vested interest in ensuring that children can go grow up with the resources that they need to achieve their God-given potential,” Harris said at the time, pledging to bring down grocery prices and to hold corporations accountable for gouging consumers.
Her new book was released Tuesday, and the New York event was the first stop on a cross-country tour promoting it. The evening’s hourlong conversation also featured digs at Trump and praise for Hillary Clinton, whom Harris credited as a mentor and guiding force throughout her 2024 campaign.

This so-called soon to be “mother” is a real idiot. She’s nervous about those dangerous evil Judeo-Christian values that we currently have under this administration. She would rather have Tim Walz in there, busy dispensing in men’s bathrooms. She would rather have transgender men competing in women’s sports. She would rather have man/woman/it Rachel Levine giving over medical advice. This soon to be mother is a brainwashed delusional lunatic. If there was ever an argument to allow abortions, this so-called woman would be a perfect example.
After hearing this again and again, I’m starting to doubt my own sanity.
Maybe the woman is brilliant and we all don’t get it.
Just wondering….
