Same-Gender Marriage Debate Resumes In Albany

ny-state-senateLegislators are returning to the Capitol today to continue their lengthy debate about same-gender marriage, and early indicators suggest it may pass if it comes to a vote.

Lawmakers have been focused on amendments that would protect religious groups from discrimination lawsuits in the event that they do not want to perform gay marriage ceremonies.

Thursday’s meetings went late into the evening, wrapping up at 11:00 p.m. Republican Senator Greg Ball, who said he will vote against the measure, nonetheless said it will likely pass if it comes to a full Senate vote.

The debate has reached a fever pitch in Albany, with protesters on both sides of the issue lining the hallways.

29 of 30 Democrats in the Senate have said they’ll vote in support of same-gender marriage. Three Republicans are needed to support it for it to pass, and two have already said they would.

Opponents of the measure have vowed to vote against Republicans who support the measure. Thursday, many at the Capitol chanted “If you vote yes, we will vote you out.”
