Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Monday defended his opposition to President Trump‘s use of executive orders to address the coronavirus pandemic, hours after the president publicly called the GOP senator out over his criticism.

Sasse — in a note tweeted from his campaign account and signed “Gym Rat” — indicated he would rather have the discussion privately with Trump but added “since you moved our conversation from private to public, here we are.”

“On the topic that had you mad this weekend: No president — whether named Obama or Trump or Biden or AOC — has unilateral power to rewrite immigration law or to cut taxes or to raise taxes. This is because America doesn’t have kings,” Sasse wrote.

  1. Apparently Mr. Sasse has forgotten how Obama and Holder (Obama’s real VP) ruled with an iron fist. Mr. Holder ran roughshod over the American people and crushed any opposition to their desired policies.

  2. hey Sasse – Trump is the only President that puts American citizens ahead of politics – he’s helping the unfortunate citizens with their bread and butter by giving them more money to buy food for their children. unlike the DemocRATS that play politics with American lives…………………

  3. The Hill quotes him:
    > “President Obama did not have the power to unilaterally rewrite immigration law with DACA, and President Trump does not have the power to unilaterally rewrite the payroll tax law,” Sasse said, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

While that should have been true, it is no longer meaningful after the Supreme Court has ruled that DACA stands even when the new President tried to cancel it. The Supreme Court, not Trump, has changed the interpretation of the Constitution.
