Yisroel Moseson, a Gerer businessman from Yerushalayim, and his partner, Shraga Israel, purchased tickets for the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed today, killing eight crew members and 149 passengers, including two Israelis.

Arutz Sheva reports that due to schedule constraints, the two decided to cancel their ticket at the last minute and their lives were saved.

In a conversation with Yisroel Hayom, Moseson recounted the story of this great miracle. “We were supposed to fly from Israel to Addis Ababa and from there to Nairobi, Kenya. Because of delays caused by business reasons in Israel, we realized that we could not board the flight to Addis Ababa and from there the connecting flight to Nairobi.”

“This morning we heard that an airplane had crashed on this route and at first I did not make the connection. When I read the details, I realized that this was the flight we were supposed to be on, and that our lives were saved. I am married with four children and my partner and I have an infrastructure and agricultural entrepreneurship company which operates in several countries around the world.”

“Tomorrow I am going to recite Gomel and I will make a Kiddush on Shabbos.”

  1. Same with me.
I was thinking to go to Nairobi, than I changed my plans, since I had no business being there in the first place.

  2. Not a neis. You don’t bentch Gomel for that. It’s a nice hashgacha pratis and a kiddush is nice but Gomel is a ברכה לבטלה. It’s like thinking you had a neis every time you take off your pants because you had you not taken them off you would’ve ended up in the washing machine

  3. Not so pashut to bentch gomel in this situation. Lemaaseh he wasn’t in any actual danger from which he was saved. Bentching gomel with shem umalchus is not a joke.

  4. This person may want to inquire regarding saying Gomel. My understanding is that one only says the blessing if they actually were in the accident and saved from injury or death. However their situation is different as they never experienced an accident since they were not on the plane. Needless to say, shevach and ho’daya are certainly expected more than us all who aren’t always aware of how much Hashem protects us from daily disasters.

  5. Not so simple. You better ask a rabbi. You were not on the plane so nothing happened to you! Making a brocho is serious, very serious.

  6. A woman asked Rav Bick Ztkl if her husband must bench Gomel as a tree fell on the spot where he normally parked his car?

Rav Bick asked her if her husband bentchs Gomel every time she washes his pants as he usually is in them?!

  7. Nice story his only error is you dont recite a gomel on being saved from an accident only if you were in the accident and was saved for example if a tree falls were you were standing a second ago you dont make a gomel if the tree falls on you but nothing happens to you then you make one

  8. I hope he asks a shaayla before benching Gomel not sure if this constitutes a requirement for this Bracha and if it doesn’t then it’s a Bracha livatala

  9. The Rebono Shel Olam orchestrated that these 2 men should not be on the flight. Had these G-d fearing men who’d have said Tefillas Haderech bekavanah been on the flight there’d probably have been no crash.

  10. The Rebono Shel Olam orchestrated that these 2 men should not be on the flight. Had these G-d fearing men who’d have said Tefillas Haderech bekavanah been on the flight there’d probably have been no crash. Which is why we bentch gomel after flying.

  11. Benny, we don’t bentch Gomel after flying. We bentch Gomel after crossing an ocean or desert (whether by ship, foot, airplane, glider…). If one flies to California, he does not bentch Gomel. However, if he flies to England, he does.
