An Israel Defense Forces soldier ended up on Iranian soil last week, the IDF said. The female soldier, 19, was returning from a visit to her family in Uzbekistan on a flight from Tashkent due to stop in Dubai when another passenger had a medical emergency, forcing the pilot to change course to Shiraz in southern Iran.

The soldier contacted Israeli officials and was told by the Mossad to speak only in Russian, reported Ynet.

She spent around nine hours at the airport. She lives in Israel without any close family that can help her, and so is classified as a Lone Soldier.

Israeli citizens are permitted to fly over Iranian territory, but IDF soldiers are not. The IDF is still investigating the incident, but because the soldier lacks security clearances, she is unlikely to be court-martialed. JNS

  1. Any military under the sun that would prosecute a soldier who had no control, let me make that clearer, zero control over the circumstances should have leadership courts martialed and publicly executed. It would be a clear, inalterable shanda to even speak of prosecution for this soldier.

    • maybe you are exhaggerating with regards to execution, but your point is indeed correct, the only thing the soldier did wrong is enrolling in the idf….. she should have stayed in Uzbekistan, get married, raise a family and wait for Moshiach.

  2. The control is to not book a flight with a flight path that would divert to Iran in case of emergency. For example, a UK to NY Flight diverted to Halifax is OK.
