Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continued his public campaign on Sunday to bring greater attention to what he calls a national crisis: the rising rates of autism in children.
Speaking during an appearance on a New York-based radio show, Kennedy emphasized the urgent need for deeper scientific research into the causes of autism. “This is an epidemic. It dwarfs the COVID epidemic and the impacts on our country because COVID killed old people. Autism affects children and affects them at the beginning of their lives, the beginning of their productivity,” Kennedy said, according to The Hill.
Kennedy has remained unwavering in his criticism of the current government response to autism, particularly the belief that improved diagnostic tools account for the rising numbers. He directly challenged findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which attribute the increase largely to more accurate diagnosis and heightened awareness.
On Wednesday, Kennedy reiterated his belief that the country is facing an “autism epidemic,” insisting it cannot be written off as the result of “better diagnostic criteria” or “genes.”
He stressed that the data points to something far more serious than what improved screening could explain. “One of the things that I think we need to move away from today is this ideology that the autism prevalence increases, the relentless increases, are simply artifacts of better diagnoses, better recognition, or changing diagnostic criteria,” Kennedy argued.
In a recent social media post, Kennedy pointed to updated figures highlighting the scope of the issue. “Autism prevalence in the U.S. has increased from 1 in 36 children to 1 in 31. We will find the root cause of this epidemic and Make America Healthy Again,” he wrote.
Kennedy’s comments are part of an ongoing effort to reshape national health priorities and rally support for a more aggressive pursuit of answers regarding the causes of autism in American children.
