The Torah parties of Yerushalayim’s city council stopped Mayor Nir Barkat from returning the secular-religious Yerushalmim party back into his coalition after it left in November.

The Torah parties had demanded the removal of a clause from the Yerushalmim-Barkat agreement which agreed to increase weekend activities of community centers on Shabbos. The clause specified that activities would be “based on the status quo,” but there was concern that giving a finger would lead to loss of a hand.

The agreement also said that “in cases where conflict with matters of religion and status quo, members of the Yerushalmim Party will act in accordance with their consciences in cooperation with the mayor.”
