Set Yourself Up for Success While Working at Home

The recent COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak has led to a number of changes, one of which is the shift to working from home for a large percentage of the workforce. As leaders and employees of non-profits, it is imperative to continue working towards goals and achieving the organization’s mission while working from home. Here are a few simple but important ways to set yourself up for success while working from home:

  1. Establish a Routine – A good routine creates a framework for the day, which leads to more organized and efficient work. Setting a specific time and place to work helps you get in a work mindset even if you are not in your normal work setting. Schedule start and end times for meetings, phone calls, and other tasks, like answering emails and working on projects, so that you can remain focused while working.
  2. Be Flexible – While establishing a routine is crucial, remaining flexible is crucial is well. Unexpected disturbances or sudden issues may arise that require you to break from routine. Whether it is a family member who needs attention, or an issue with Zoom, it is important to be able to adapt and deal with these challenges. This might mean pushing a schedule forward or backward a few hours, or switching from Zoom to regular call.
  3. Focus on Attitude – The number one factor required for success in any situation is a positive attitude. In any challenge, there is also opportunity, and a positive attitude means focusing on the opportunities instead of the challenges. Instead of focusing on what’s lacking or difficult about working from home, focus on the positive aspects of working from home and what you can gain from the experience.

Although adapting to working from home can be a difficult transition, with the right tips and mindset, working from home can be an opportunity instead of a challenge.
