Seven People Have Been Entrusted With The Keys To The Internet

internet-keyThere are smart cards that are the actual keys to the Internet. There are seven of them and they hold the power to restarting the world wide web “in the event of a catastrophic event.”

The basic idea is that in the event of an Internet catastrophe, the DNSSEC (domain name system security) could be damaged or compromised and we’d be left without a way to verify if a URL is pointing to the correct website. That’s when the holders of these smart cards would be called into action:

A minimum of five of the seven keyholders – one each from Britain, the U.S., Burkina Faso, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, China, and the Czech Republic – would have to converge at a U.S. base with their keys to restart the system and connect everything once again.

A minimum of five people is needed because each of the smart cards contains only a fraction of the recovery key necessary to set things right again. This means that no single person will hold all the power to resetting our little cyber world.

  1. I would be in favor of the web closing down for good. Life was so much easier and less troublesome without this relying on the internet for our daily lives.
Can you imagine how trouble free we will be in the event this happens.? I wish it were to happen soon,.

  2. Betcha Obama would love all of these cards for himself. Mr. Bigshot, trying to control it all, so he must feel very left out here!! Poor Pres.!!

  3. What happens if there’s is CH”V a major catastrophe that compromises the internet and 5 of those key holders can’t get together?

  4. iN CASE OF A CATASTROPHE, WHAT MAKES ANYONE THINK 5 PEOPLE FROM 5 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES WOULD EVEN BE ABLE TO REACH THE US?

  5. I hope they are sending some rice with the key. We don’t mind keeping the key (away from alQuaida) for you, but it is the rice we really need. Waiting in Burkina Faso…

  7. AHA! Our southern border is kept open to allow these keyholders in, if they can’t get a visa.
And by the way – is the U.S. keyholder a citizen? (Can I ask that if I’m not in Arizona?)
