The Israeli Ministry of Defense recently announced that a large shipment of heavy bombs, which had been authorized by the Trump Administration, arrived in Israel late at night. The cargo, which consisted of MK-84 bombs, was unloaded at the port of Ashdod. From there, it was transferred onto numerous trucks and driven to various air force bases across the country.
Following the inauguration of President Donald Trump last month, the White House gave the Pentagon the directive to release the hold that had been imposed by the Biden Administration on the shipment of 2,000-pound bombs that were meant for Israel. The 1,800 MK-84 bombs, which had been in storage in the United States, were placed on a ship and sent to Israel.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yisroel Katz, commented, “The munitions shipment that arrived in Israel tonight, released by the Trump Administration, represents a significant asset for the Air Force and the IDF and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States.” He also added, “In our recent conversation, Secretary of Defense, HON Pete Hegseth reaffirmed America’s commitment to continue providing Israel with all necessary tools to ensure its security. I thank President Donald Trump and the U.S. Administration for their unwavering support of the State of Israel. We will continue working together to strengthen our security.”
Earlier in August, the United States had sent Israel a delivery of MK-83 bombs, each weighing half a ton. In June, the Biden administration had made the decision to release 1,700 500-pound bombs that had been delayed as part of a weapons shipment to Israel, which had been paused in April due to U.S. concerns over the IDF’s military actions in Rafah. This shipment was promptly dispatched to Israel in early July.
In May, Axios reported that President Joe Biden had made the decision to put on hold a planned weapons shipment to Israel. The White House confirmed this decision later, explaining that the shipment of bombs had been paused due to U.S. objections to a planned Israeli military operation in the Gazan city of Rafah. Just a day later, President Biden issued a warning that he would halt all shipments of American weapons to Israel if Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu went ahead with a large-scale invasion of Rafah.
