ravshachplaque-small[Photos below.] Bnei Brak residents are outraged as, for the second time in two weeks, a memorial plaque dedicated in memory of Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt”l, rabbon shel kol bnei hagolah and rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva, has been defaced by vandals. The memorial plaque is one of a number of other plaques placed by the municipality located throughout Bnei Brak, paying homage to historic personalities, including roshei yeshivos and others who lived in the city, as well as institutions and neighborhoods.

Each plaque has biographical details about the person, institution or neighborhood being paid tribute to.

One of these plaques is located at the home of Maran Rav Shach at 27 Rechov Raavad. The plaque states, in both Hebrew and English, “The Home of the Avi Ezri (1898-2001),” along with brief biographical details.

A few days ago, at 5 a.m., unknown vandals spraypainted the inscription that appears on the plaque.

Neighbors who live nearby contacted the Bnei Brak municipality, and the plaque was restored within a short amount of time.

Now, for a second time, vandals have struck, this time spraypainting the picture of Rav Shach’s face on the plaque.

While some news outlets are claiming that the vandalism is related to the recent dispute related to the Israeli edition of the Hebrew Yated Ne’eman newspaper, there are no details at this time confirming this suspicion.

Whatever the motive, residents are outraged by the audacity displayed by the vandals.

“It is bizayon haTorah, plain and simple,” a talmid at Yeshivas Slabodka in Bnei Brak, told Matzav.com Israel. “The local residents are shocked. What type of person could display such a lack of respect? We are all horrified.”

  1. The chutzpah is beyond words. I don’t even know what to say. All of us, followers and talmidim and admirers of rav Shach, can do only one thing: Keep learning, davening, doing chessed, making a Kiddush Hashem, and following everything Rav Shach did. Rav Shach was a malach Elokim and one of the greatest men of the last century. May he continue to be a meilitz yosher for all those who follow his derech.

  2. We have to catch this guy/guys and beat the living daylights out of them! Just like the Sikrikim, they have to be taught a lesson they wont easily forget! These thugs only understand one language! Violence works!

  3. During the Roman siege of Jerusalem, some Jewish zealots burned large stockpiles of food that would have lasted the Jews several years. I never understood this. With what has been going on lately in our community; now I understand.

  4. What a tea terrible bizayon haTorah! Oy lanu shekach alsa b’yameinu.

But maybe we should sense the outrage and revulsion that most Yidden – shomrei Toah or not – feel when someone representing “us chareidim” defaces Yad V’shem. Perhaps we should have more loudly decried that act, and the person who did this may not have been inspired to do so.
