Shocking: Tea Party Senate Nominee O’Donnel Wouldn’t Lie to Nazis if She Were Hiding Jews

tea-partyLong before Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell rocked the Delaware GOP by upending establishment favorite Mike Castle, she founded a group named the Savior’s Alliance for Lifting the Truth (SALT). SALT focuses on promoting Christian morality among Generation X and places particular emphasis on always telling the truth. In 1998, while O’Donnell was a guest on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, she elaborated on this point, arguing that “telling the truth is always the right thing to do, I believe, and that’s what always gets you out of a situation.”

Comedian Eddie Izzard pressed her on just how far she would take her anti-lying beliefs. Izzard asked O’Donnell whether or not she would lie to Nazis who showed up at her door during WWII and demanded to know if she were hiding any Jewish people in her house. O’Donnell refused to even entertain the notion of concealing the truth from Nazis in that scenario because “you never have to practice deception”:

O’DONNELL: A lie, whether it be a lie or an exaggeration, is disrespect to whoever you’re exaggerating or lying to, because it’s not respecting reality.

MAHER: Quite the opposite, it can be respect.

IZZARD: What if someone comes to you in the middle of the Second World War and says, ‘do you have any Jewish people in your house?’ and you do have them. That would be a lie. That would be disrespectful to Hitler.

O’DONNELL: I believe if I were in that situation, God would provide a way to do the right thing righteously. I believe that!
MAHER: God is not there. Hitler’s there and you’re there.

O’DONNELL: You never have to practice deception. God always provides a way out.

In addition to the fact that O’Donnell’s unwillingness to lie about the Jews’ whereabouts would have almost certainly resulted in their capture and imprisonment, an important question must be asked: Does O’Donnell believe that those brave Gentile families who hid Jews from the Nazis weren’t righteous because they practiced deception?

At the end of the show, O’Donnell also proclaimed that “we took the Bible and prayer out of public schools, now we’re having weekly shootings practically.”

  1. If a Nazi would offer Hillary Clinton 2 dollars she would tell him, then she would tell the media that she thought the Nazi wanted the Jew to give him an ice cream sundae

  2. gimme a break! why is matzav repeating ridiculous accusations from a radical left wing group???

she never said she wouldn’t lie to the nazis. she first said that one should never lie and then Izzard backed her in a corner with that nazi question. She couldn’t win. If she had said that she would lie in that situation then they would have pressed her on what her guidelines are as to when one can lie and when one can’t – and there’s no way she could have won that. And of course if she said that she wouldn’t lie then she would absolutely and rightly be unelectable.

Skilled experienced politicians would have found a more elegant way to double-talk themselves out of that corner but she is a newbie to national politics and she clumsily tried to get out of the corner by saying that g-d would never put her in that situation to begin with.

Clumsy answer? absolutely! A nazi? of course not!

And when we wish for better government and politicians who care more about the people than their own careers, aren’t we better off with a politician who’s not a professional in the art of double speak?

  3. All she said was that G-d would provide her with a way out of lying. She seemes to be much much much more ehrlich than just about any other politician out there.

What happened to matzav? This post. Making a big deal out of Lipas shul while NOT doing so for others (If you would do every or most Shul’s, it would be appropriate to include his. But you DON’T…)

  4. Do you read the article your posting before you create a headline or are just copying someone else ! Her words are clear she believes (and I’m not getting into the merits of her beliefs ) god would prevent her from having to lie. I’m sure she similarly believes god would not cause her cause the death of Jews. The shocking part of the story is the callous disrespect for god shown by the anchormen “god is not there…”

  5. I think Christine O’Donnell has her heart in the right place. Eddie Izzard is being disingenuous and is picking a very specific scenario to try and score a point. The headline writer of this piece is also not seeing the bigger picture. Give me a willing-to-learn ethical monotheist any day over a rabid secularist. The Tea Party movement is not a bad thing. It is proof that more and more people are turning to G-d. All the Christian sects will eventually agree to Messianic Government reigning from Jerusalem as has been prophesied.

  6. #4 Is So Right!!!!!!!!!!!

Matzav, Give me a break, maybe work on your english!!!!

The only “Shocking” thing about this story is the stupidity of the editor who allowed this to be published.

  7. She just never learned what true Emes is according to Torah. It doesn’t look like she meant to say that she would turn Jews over to Nazis. Her opposition is drawing their own conclusions for their own benefit. Unless, of course, there are other indications that she would choose truth of word over truth of action in such a situation…)

  8. I think that there are a lot of office holders who are fine people and can do a good job in their local offices, but should stay there; heaven help us if she ever gets to a point where there’s buzz about putting her on a national ticket.

  9. Izzard didn’t go far enough. He should have followed up by asking. well if you believe God would not have put you in a position to lie, what would you have done if Jews begged you to hide them? Knowing that you would have to lie to the Nazi, would you have turned them down?

I find this woman appalling and I, by the way, am not Jewish. I hope someone asks her on camera if she would have hidden Jews in her basement knowing that she would have to lie to the Nazi. This will tell lots more about her character. I could not care less about her dabbling in witchcraft but this callous response that God would provide a way ignores that millions of Jews were murdered. If her God allowed this , he is callous. If he didn’t stop it he does not deserve to be worshiped.
