Not Intended For Pesach

By Rabbi Sholem Y. Fishbane

Kashrus Administrator, Chicago Rabbinical Council

Recommendations are for products purchased in the United States.
Additional items and information are available at www.ASKcRc.org.

Due to COVID-19, more consumers have turned to online shopping for their groceries, which makes it difficult to determine whether a given item is kosher-certified. To facilitate shopping in this new reality, the cRc has compiled a short list of items that do not require certification. These items are inherently kosher, and nothing is done to them during the manufacturing process that affects their kosher status. This list can be used for both online and offline shopping, and even when we return to in-person grocery shopping.

  1. I am not sure why milk is allowed (certification preferable) and butter not mentioned, can someone explain? Thank you for the list.

  2. Lemon zest is a serious problem, unless it’s organic, according to בד”ץ העדה החרדית. The pesticides are not kosher and cannot be scrubbed off the peel.

  3. Butter needs a hechsher because it often contains non-kosher whey, which is a byproduct of the manufacture of cheese.
