Hebrew University of Yerushalayim has announced to its staff that the university would be closed on Tisha B’Av in order to show respect for Tisha B’Av. In response, Arutz Sheva reports, Prof. Amiram Goldblum of the university’s medical faculty sharply condemned the decision, writing, “Unbelievable – a shameful submission to the religious and to the Jewish religion in the State of Israel. Sickening.”

Goldblum later added, “I thought Hebrew University had divested itself of religion, and that this was a university of both Jews and Arabs. I don’t recall the university ever closing for Muslim or Christian festivals. Perhaps we should change its name to ‘Jewish University’? That would fit in well with the rampant racism in this country.”

Channel 12 News invited Goldblum for an interview, during which the professor explained that he was “opposed to the university’s decision to obligate me to suffer on the Ninth of Av — without being able to enter my laboratory at the university, make progress with my research with my students (some of whom won’t be there due to religious reasons, and that’s fine with me). My problem is solely that of being coerced into doing things.”

  1. The only thing sickening is you calling him sickening. You can be a thousand percent right and he can be entirely misguided. But, from his upbringing that’s how he sees the world and it’s actual very logical when viewing it thru his glasses. You missed this chance in the 9 days to respond with empathy, engagement and inclusion. Share with him warm words of Torah and brotherly love and pray and hope he is helped to come around to emes.

    • All good and true. But someone who is a letz, like this guy, Tochacha doesn’t usually wouldn’t work on him. Here’s the reason:
Although the Mitzvah is – הוכח תוכיח אפילו מאה פעמים,
Still – ליצנות אחת דוחה מאה תוכחות.
      As Dovid Hamelech says:
הלא משנאיך ה’ אשנא, ובתקוממך אתקוטט, תכלית שנאה שנאתים, כאויבים היו לי

  2. While he is a nebach and it is sad that בני אברהם יצחק ויעקב have are so uneducated and misguided, we still should realize that it is sickening or we end up becoming מושפע. We could feel bad for him and call it sickening simultaneously.

  3. A fine specimen of a Zionist. I would expect nothing better from any of them, just some, either out of cowardice, or because its politically inconvenient, usually won’t say it out loud.

Take for example their lame excuse of a PM that happens to occupy that seat right now, he is the first Israeli PM to go on vacation during the Nine Days.

    • Hebrew University closes for Tisha b’Av — and ONE professor objects.
We should therefore stop financial support to Hebrew University, not because of Hebrew University’s policy (which we applaud), but because of the ONE professor who objected?

I take it that you do not have an advanced degree in logic.

  4. Very soon all the universities and schools in the world will be shut down for good, replaced with normal education.

  5. You are a bunch of morons that can’t read. Matzav wasn’t killing him “sickening”. Instead, he was quoted as saying “sickening”

  6. Interesting that commentators here characterize Goldblum as a “typical zionist” when he’s not even a zionist at all, let alone typical!!
He denies the very principles of Zionism and is too radical for even the New Israel Fund, from which he had to depart.

Called IDF soldiers “Jewish terrorists” and wished for “vengeance” and for “lightning to strike them down” for demolishing illegal Arab homes.[1]
