Silencing Airplanes

Slowing departing airplanes by 34 mph will significantly lower noise and only slow takeoffs by 30 seconds, the Futurism news site reported.

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) study found that for a typical Boeing 737, the slowdown will only add 30 seconds to a plane’s climb to 10,000 feet at the cost of burning seven additional gallons of fuel.

Because of advanced navigation software, airplane noise has become more concentrated over tighter flight paths around the country, so that some neighborhoods are plagued by takeoffs more raucous than ever before.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is evaluating the study and may slow departing jets from 288 mph to 253 mph.
