Rav Yeshaya Yaakov Portugal, the eldest son of the Skulener Rebbe, Rav Yisroel Avrohom Portugal, underwent an eight-hour liver transplant over the weekend. On Friday, Rav Yeshaya Yaakov, who has been feeling unwell for months, received a call that a liver was available for him, and he was quickly rushed to Columbia Medical Center in Manhattan for the surgery.
Rav Yeshaya Yaakov heads the Meor Hagolah kehillah in Montreal.
According to sources, the physicians caring for Rav Yeshaya Yaakov has said that it is still too early to determine how successful the surgery was. It may take some additional days to examine how his body is reacting to his new liver before issuing a statement regarding the prognosis.
