Following the ousting of Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, right-wing Israeli parliamentarian Betzalel Smotrich is vying for the role so his union of religious right parties can “restore the Torah justice system” in Israel.

“We want the justice portfolio because we want to restore the Torah justice system,” Smotrich said on Sunday, later telling Kan public radio on Monday morning that Israel needs to “return to the way it conducted itself in the days of King David, while adjusting for life in 2019.”

“The Jewish people will want (it). They’ll see how the law of the Torah is correct and just and moral and humane,” Smotrich touted.

“You need to understand what the Torah has to offer our times, how it blends with democracy and civilian life that society determines for itself,” he added. “It’s not scary like people are trying to make it appear.”

  1. we appreciate the right wing in Israel for endorsing authentic Jewish law in the court system, then hopefully we will be able to move to Israel.

the current law system is based on old Turkish and British laws

  2. Sounds like a reincarnation of the Sanhedrin proposal of the ’50s. The Gedolei Yisroel were against it then, as they should be now. Modern day Eretz Yisroel, as viewed through the lens of Torah and its chachomim, has always been to deal with the metziyus of a secular government of an overwhelming Jewish population, rather than as a Jewish/Torah state. Halevai it should continue to be so, until the coming of Mashiach Tzidkeinu BB”A.

  3. Good for him! This looks like a real turning point in our times… the first time a re-election is happening, all the issues becoming about Torah… perhaps Moshiach is truly on his way. Looks promising that’s for sure. I believe it

  4. Very fascinating. Who is his Rebbe? Who did he learn by? He must of had very good hadracha when he was in Yeshiva.
