New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, joined Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for a town hall event last night.

The gathering took place as candidates in the mayoral race continue to look for ways to strengthen their appeal to working-class voters.

Despite heavy rain, a large crowd filled Brooklyn College’s Claire Tow Theater, where attendees greeted both Sanders and Mamdani with a thunderous standing ovation.

Sanders, who endorsed Mamdani in June ahead of the primary, invited him to host the New York stop of his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour. “You have the President of the United States working to make it harder for him to get elected, so what are these people, these oligarchs afraid of?” Sanders asked.

During the forum, Mamdani responded to questions from residents about immigration, the steep costs of child care, and the overall issue of affordability in the city.

“Together, we will freeze the–?” Mamdani prompted, and the audience shouted back in unison, “Rent!”

He also took the opportunity to criticize a key rival in the race. “We have to beat Andrew Cuomo one more time,” Mamdani said.

Officials estimated that roughly 1,800 people attended the event. CBS News New York reporter Adi Guajardo noted that at least two audience members were removed after causing disruptions.

Earlier on Monday, the city’s annual Labor Day Parade brought all four candidates together, where each directed pointed remarks at their opponents.

Andrew Cuomo, the former governor, attacked Mamdani by calling him a “stooge for Trump” and accused him of dodging debates in favor of town hall appearances. “I challenged him to five debates, and he refuses. Why? Because he cannot, he cannot explain his positions,” Cuomo declared.

Mayor Eric Adams reiterated his commitment to staying in the contest, emphasizing his connection to ordinary workers. “I’m the only person in the race that has ever been a union member. I’m not part of the elite. I’m part of everyday working class people,” he said.

Republican contender Curtis Sliwa argued that he is emerging as the candidate of the people. “Thank you, Eric Adams, for vacillating because now his supporters are jumping over to my campaign because they don’t know where Eric Adams is from day to day,” he said.
