The Chumash Mesoras HaRav, published recently by OU Press, has been a multi-year project to make Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik’s commentary on the Torah readily accessible to readers.

Compiled and edited by Dr. Arnold Lustiger, the work draws upon material from dozens of published sources in Hebrew, English and Yiddish, as well as many previously unpublished lectures and tapes of Rav Soloveitchik’s shiurim.

The material is presented in concise English, often in the rov’s own language, as a running commentary alongside the Chumash text.

  1. The yarmulka indeed seemed strange.

I thought maybe Rav Yoshe Ber z”l was wearing an old style heyche yarmulke, but I don’t think he usually did that, esp. in later years.

    Then I looked more closely.

If you do so, you will notice that someone is standing right behind him (which may also explain the Rav’s broad smile. It may have been some type of simcha). I think that part of what at first seems to be the Rav’s yarmulka in disarray is actually the yarmulka/hair of the person right behind him. In the photo, in a sort of optical illusion, they appear connected at first, but it just ain’t so
