reichenberg1[Fund info below.] The Journal News reports: A 5-year-old boy shocked by a live wire during Tropical Storm Irene remained in critical but stable condition Monday, authorities said, as friends and relatives of a man killed while trying to help him continued to mourn the death.

David M. Reichenberg, 50, was going to the aid of Reuven Herbst when he was killed by the live wire that injured the boy.
Reichenberg left behind his wife, Ruth Miriam; daughter Rifka Hadassah, 19; and sons Josh, 14, Eliyahu, 12, and Akiva, who will mark his 11th birthday on Wednesday.

A fund to help the family has been created, Reichenberg’s friend of 25 years, Abraham Stubin, said.

“The father was so loving and he kept everything together,” Stubin said. “It’s just beyond me to know what’s going to be. … They have no means to support themselves. He had very little life insurance.”

Reichenberg died not far from the Jacaruso Drive home he shared with his family, who were receiving mourners Monday.
Reuven is in the pediatric burn unit at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

His father, Yehuda Herbst, also tried to help and was burned by the wire near the family’s home at Merrick Drive and Union Road. He was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern and released.

Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc. came under further criticism Monday for its response to the downed wire touched by the boy, with Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin saying the company had failed to make a timely repair.

“It is a live wire and they needed to take care of it ASAP,” Jasmin said. “We have a dead person and a child in critical condition. The police had called them to get it fixed. They were slow to turn off the power.”

A company spokesman, Mike Donovan, said a review was under way and it was not yet clear what exactly had happened.

He called Reichenberg a hero for trying to save the boy.

Jasmin said she understands O&R had a lot of work to do. Village police told the utility about the wire but no repairs were made, she said.

She also said O&R was slow to cut off the power after the accident.

Reichenberg died likely from touching the boy, who was burning from the electricity.

Detective Reginald Anderson said a police investigation was continuing.

A fund has been created to help the family of Rabbi Reichenberg, who is survived by his wife and four children. All donations will go directly to the family. Checks can be made out and mailed to: Ohr Somayach — Reichenberg Fund, 244 Route 306, Monsey, NY 10952
