A police sergeant in St. Louis was shot in the face tonight while sitting in his car, an attack that is eerily familiar to a fatal shooting of a police officer in Texas earlier the same day.

The officer in St. Louis, whose name has not yet been released, survived the attack and was reported in critical condition at a local hospital.

“He was targeted because he was a police officer,” Mayor Francis Slay said at a press conference after the attack. “He didn’t stop anybody. He didn’t point a gun at anybody,” he said.

The shooting was described by Police Chief Sam Dotson as an ambush. The officer had not pulled anybody over and was not involved in any kind of stop but was parked alongside the road when another vehicle pulled up next to him, he said. The attacker then fired into his vehicle and drove off. Read more at the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH.

In the earlier incident, a police officer in San Antonio, Texas, was fatally shot in the head on Sunday while writing a traffic ticket. The officer was sitting in his car outside the police headquarters when another driver pulled up, got out of the car and shot him twice, according to officials. The suspect fled the scene and is still at large. The officer was a 20-year veteran of the police force.
