The Trump administration’s State Department implemented a “one flag policy” on Tuesday, mandating that only the American flag can be displayed at any U.S. embassy or government facility, whether in the United States or abroad.

Under the new directive, flags associated with specific movements, such as Black Lives Matter, are no longer allowed to be displayed at government buildings. During President Biden’s tenure, such flags were prominently flown, including over iconic locations like the White House.

“Starting immediately, only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestic and abroad, and featured in U.S. government content,” reads the directive, according to a report from The Washington Free Beacon.

“The flag of the United States of America united all Americans under the universal principles of justice, liberty, and democracy. These values, which are the bedrock of our great country, are shared by all American citizens, past and present,” the statement added.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued the directive shortly after being sworn into office on Tuesday, according to The Free Beacon. The move aligns with President Trump’s campaign pledge to dismantle progressive policies embedded in federal government operations, including those addressing diversity, equity, and gender identity initiatives previously implemented under the Biden administration.

On his first day back in the Oval Office, Trump signed an executive order directing the dismantling of government programs focused on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and environmental justice.

Another executive action taken by the president reaffirmed the recognition of only two biological sexes, male and female. The order also instructed federal agencies to revise official documents to reflect individuals’ sex at birth, eliminate references to gender identity or preferred pronouns, and preserve women-only spaces in facilities like shelters and prisons.

Additionally, the White House announced that employees working in federal diversity offices would be placed on paid leave by Wednesday night as part of the administration’s decision to terminate these programs.

During the Biden presidency, the State Department had permitted a variety of Pride flags to be flown alongside the American flag at embassies and other government locations. For instance, in June 2021, the U.S. embassy in Nassau, Bahamas, raised a rainbow Pride flag to commemorate Pride Month.

In June 2023, Pride flags were also prominently displayed at the White House as the Biden administration hosted a Pride Month celebration on the South Lawn.

The Biden administration also authorized the display of the Black Lives Matter flag at U.S. embassies and consulates. In February 2022, the U.S. embassy in Brazil raised the BLM flag in honor of Black History Month.
