The state on Tuesday unveiled a new overpass to connect LaGuardia Airport to the Grand Central Parkway in order to ease traffic problems that have plagued the area for years.
The overpass, which will open Wednesday, is the first of 26 new planned bridges and “flyovers” that will replace the current intersections and eliminate the need for most of the traffic signals on interior airport roads, officials said.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo joked how traffic there has always been so bad that he refused to go to LaGuardia to pick anyone up.
“All my life — I am a Queens boy — pick someone up at La Guardia? No, make my sister go,” he said. “It was a hellacious experience.”
