lakewood-small1A car reported stolen in Howell was recovered in Lakewood after a driver tried to speed away from an officer attempting to pull him over and crashed on Princeton Avenue. Officer Kevin Doyle was following an Infiniti sedan as it swerved up East 7th Street just after 10 p.m. yesterday, when a look-up of its license plate revealed it to be stolen, Lt. Joseph Isnardi said. As other officers arrived in the area and attempted to pull the car over, the driver – later identified as Shaddiy Whittaker, 19, – took off, Isnardi said.At one point, as the car took a sharp left turn, a female passenger was thrown from the car. Doyle stopped to administer first aid and the other officers continued the pursuit.

The passenger, a 16-year-old female whose name was not released, was transported the Kimball Medical Center and released after receiving treatment.

The Infiniti eventually crashed on Princeton Avenue, in a heavily frum area, startling residents who came out of their homes to see what happened. The driver and two other occupants fled on foot before officers arrived on scene, Isnardi said.

A short time later, members of the Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit pulled over a taxi that had recently picked up Whittaker. He was placed under arrest and charged with second-degree eluding, theft, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

He was also issued 10 motor vehicle summonses.

Police are still searching for the two other occupants of the car, Isnardi said.

The Infiniti was impounded by police and will be released to its rightful owner after processing.

Sgt. John Stillwell and officers Leroy Marshall and Jason Pederson assisted in the investigation.
