More than three million people are without power in the Northeast after a massive and rare October snow storm slammed into the region on Shabbos. And now, dozens of New York yeshivos are affected by the storm and the outages, postponing the beginning of the winter zeman or forcing the zeman to commence in temporary locations.
Yeshiva Ohr Hameir of Peekskill, NY, led by its rosh yeshiva, Rav Elya Kanarek (pictured above), has postponed the opening of the zeman for the bais medrash, while the mesivta bochurim will be starting the zeman off the Peekskill campus, perhaps in Monsey, NY, about 25 minutes away.
Monsey, itself, has been hit ferociously by the storm, with thousands of people suffering from power outages following a snowfall of about 10-12 inches. In Orange and Rockland counties, more than 80,000 remain powerless.
Compounding the storm’s impact, said officials, were still-leafy trees, which gave the snow something to hang onto and that put tremendous weight on branches, said National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro. That led to limbs breaking off and contributed to the widespread outages.
Governors have declared states of emergency in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York, and at least three deaths were blamed on the weather.
Central Park set a record for both the date and the month of October with 2.9 inches of snow.
The beginning of the zeman at Yeshiva Gedolah of Paterson, NJ, led by its rosh yeshiva, Rav Elya Chaim Swerdloff (pictured at left), has also been postponed. Paterson was hit by seven inches of snow.
In New York, Shabbos marked just the fourth October day with measurable snowfall in Central Park since record-keeping began 135 years ago, the National Weather Service said.
