A new study by University of California at San Francisco researchers found that wearing a face mask can help mitigate the severity of coronavirus cases. While healthcare experts have maintained that face coverings help protect others from your respiratory droplets, the new research shows that the wearer is also protected.
According to Fox News, donning a mask reduces the dose of virus that the wearer is exposed to, and therefore influences the severity of the disease. The authors of the study said that “universal public masking during the COVID-19 pandemic should be one of the most important pillars of disease control.” The said that there are two reasons why masks are so effective in taming the spread of COVID-19.
The first is that they prevent the spread of viral particles from people who don’t have any symptoms. New research shows that even asymptomatic people, those who have no symptoms of illness can spread the disease, according to Healthline. Secondly, face coverings reduce the viral load. or inoculum, that the mask wearer receives, which will result in milder disease.

My head is spinning.
There are some important points here that need to be noted, albeit certainly recommended and wise to wear a mask in situations requiring it. Firstly, realize that the source here is a “study”, not a statistic. The track record of “studies” regarding COVID-19 has not been very good, as we all know from the vacillating statements of most of our leaders and would-be leaders throughout the pandemic. Thus, the only way to know if the study is viable is to back it up with statistics. The stats about mask-wearing vis-a-vis virus severity are available if a researcher doing a “study” looks for them, but this group of researchers did not look for them. So even if the theory that less viral inoculum will result in less severity, there have not been reported statistics about it.
Secondly, the article quotes Healthline, who indeed concluded from their “studies” that asymptomatic people can spread the disease. However, if you read their findings on their website, you will see that they only discovered that viral residue was found on surfaces touched by asymptomatic people, but not that anyone got the disease from that residue (in fact there is ample evidence that they wouldn’t get it: a group of journalists did an impromptu survey, and swiped a bunch of public area surfaces, like Home Depot restrooms, supermarket service counters, etc., and found viral residue 100% of the time, showing that all of us are surrounded by viral residue constantly, but we’re not sick or dead). Their conclusion, however, is contradicted by the CDC’s statistics (the WHO too, though they “retracted” and conflated their statements in unintelligible interpretations), which find that transmission by asymptomatic people is “very rare”.

This study is an example of someone reinventing the wheel.
Motivation for this redundant study is money. Researchers can attract large financial support by doing research on the current fad. SO there’s tons of research being done on the Covid-19. Now they have to show something for all that money and publish a “new” discovery.
