Oh, Suddenly the Left ‘Agrees’ With a P’sak of the Gadol Hador?

rav-elyashivThe following quote from Itamar Ben-Gvir on the headlines in the secular Israeli press praising Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv’s statement earlier today that Jews are not allowed to go up to the Har Habayis aptly puts in perspective the manner in which the press chooses, at its convenience, to laud or criticize. When a halachic ruling works out well for them, they have no problem discussing how sensible and correct it is. When it is contrary to their interests, however, they go on a rampage, with no regard for the dignity of chareidim in general or the kavod of the gadol hador.

Itamar Ben-Gvir stated as follows:

It is strange that the rav – who is the gadol hador – is regularly portrayed in the media as an extreme person, about whom, only recently, we heard criticism from the media and leftists that he fans the flames of the Shabbos fights in Jerusalem. And suddenly, when the rav says something that is in line with the worldview of the left, and speaks against “starting up with the nations,” suddenly his words are treated as the “holy of holies.” Peres goes to visit him in the sukkah and the media spin goes into gear pointing fingers at the Jews… Would they do the same if Rav Elyashiv would come out and say what the halacha is about what should be done to those who are mechallel Shabbos according to halacha? Would we see the same headlines, with the same level of adoration, if Rav Elyashiv would say what his opinion is regarding the Toeivah Parade in Jerusalem?

  1. l. oberstein – in principle, yes, we do advocate it, if like a gazillion pre-requisites and conditions are met – so much so that one was killed less than once in 70 years, says the gemora.

It’s wrong to portray yiddishkeit in a ‘well, that was then, BUT NOW, that we’re so enlightened, we wouldnt kill people because that’s crazy and barbaric – no, we dont kill people because there’s no sanhedrin hagadol – if there were, we would carry them out now just as then.

  2. To #4 – he is a Yerushalmi. It is common practice for Yerushalmim to wear a shtreimel on shabbos. They also daven nusach Askenaz for the most part, and pronounce the davening with a litvishe havarah, albeit with a Yerushalmi lilt.
