A judge on Wednesday said families who suffered losses in the 12-story collapse of a South Florida condominium building will receive at least $150 million in initial compensation.

The figure includes insurance on the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside. Expected proceeds from the sale of where the property once stood is also included.

“The court’s concern has always been the victims here,” Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman said at a hearing. “Their rights will be protected.”

The figure does not count toward any proceeds from any of the numerous lawsuits filed since the June 24 collapse. Those lawsuits have consolidated into a class action. As of Wednesday, at least 97 people have died.

  1. Wait. Hold it. Where exactly is the $150,000,000.00 per person going to come from?! Thin air? THE TAXPAYERS??? Why should the hardworking Miami taxpayer, minding his own business, have to pay for some negligence of some condominium management board??? Multiply by at least 97. What is that, 1.45 billion??? Insane crazy numbers. As always, punish the little guy just trying to survive. Keep beating down the worthless middle class taxpayers.

  2. 150÷97 isn’t that much per family! Likely their apartments were valued at nearly half of that that. Also, the collapsed building had 156 apartments. Don’t owners of other apartments also get? Much ado about nothing! People are likely to get above a million each and they’ll pay taxes on top of that.
