The Surfside, Fla., building official who gave the condo that collapsed here Thursday a clean bill of health as recently as in November 2018 has been placed on leave from his current job as interim building official for Doral, Fla., the city said Tuesday.

Rosendo Prieto was the Surfside building official when the 40-year recertification inspection process was under way at the Champlain Towers South building. Mr. Prieto served as building official in Surfside for about seven years before leaving that position late last year.

Mr. Prieto didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Doral officials said that Mr. Prieto was an employee of C.A.P. Government Inc., which provides building department services to governments. He began working with Doral on May 3 as a temporary building official “to provide building inspection services,” according to a city statement.

With his new job in Doral, about 20 miles inland from Surfside in Miami-Dade County, Mr. Prieto moved from a somewhat sleepy seaside town to one of the state’s fastest-growing cities. Doral has a population of nearly 60,000, or about 10 times the size of Surfside. It has undergone a recent transformation from an industrial Miami suburb to a more affluent and vibrant community, with a mix of brand-new multifamily developments, gated communities, and office buildings.
