rick-santorumIf Rick Santorum secures the Republican nomination, expect to hear this mantra from his Jewish supporters: In times of crisis, social issues don’t matter.

The former Pennsylvania senator, who is leading in national polls in the race for the GOP presidential nod, is fiercely anti-abortion and believes that states have the right to ban birth control — stances that are – unfortunately – at odds with the views of most liberal, non-religious American Jews.

Not a problem, says Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a non-frum group.

“Jobs and the economy and international affairs, these macro issues are front and center,” he said. “If the micro issues, abortion and contraceptives, become predominant, then you’ve got a problem. But this is a big picture, big issue, high-stakes election.”

But the prospect of Santorum winning the Republican nomination excites Jewish Democrats, as they believe he will be an easier opponent for President Obama in November.

Among Jewish Republicans, the bulk of the party’s Jewish donors and advisers have signed with Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor’s relative moderation was seen as a natural fit for a GOP Jewish constituency that is hawkish on Israel and often fiscally conservative but averse to extremes on social issues.

  1. “expect to hear this mantra from his Jewish supporters: In times of crisis, social issues don’t matter.”

    INCORRECT!

We follow the Torah no matter what! No changes!

  2. To #1: reading comprehension matters. Read the article again and digest its message so that you’ll understand why your comment is irrelevant in this context.

  3. torah jews are not his “supporters” “supporters” mean big bucks givers. give your bucks to a real tzedakah. let the rbs”o worry about leading this country. those “jews” are “unfortunately jews”

  4. The statement is incorrect for one reason: It is the unraveling of society’s moral compass that has, in great part, contributed to the economic crisis and the apathy of the American public toward an ever-expanding government that wants to micro-regulate the lives of its citizens.

  5. Don’t count Gingrich out yet!

Newt Gingrich is the best of all candidates and would restore America to its former greatness!

  6. Of course, the truth is like Yossi in Comment #1 and the article itself point out: this heavy aversion to strong conservative social issues is by “liberal, non-religious American Jews,” who, very unfortunately, are far away from the truth of our Torah HaKdosha.

We though, who, Boruch HaShem, do have a connection to the truth of our Torah, need to realize and remember that OUR TORAH ITSELF clearly states extremely strong conservative values on these social issues and thus instructs us to be:

    Fully against abortion

Fully against all Toeiva so-called “rights” and Toeiva so-called “marriage”

Promoters of the realization of the scientific fact that G-D created the world, and that tyhe task of mankind is to utilize the world to serve G-D.

Staunchly proud of our Torah HaKdosha, which the world calls “The Holy Bible” — yes, we ARE “Bible Thumping” people! (And, of course, we further have the “Torah Sheba’al Peh,” so we are also “Talmud Thumping” people, and “Shulchan Aruch Thumping” people, etc.)

  8. But isn’t it a moot point that the article’s talking about non-frum yidden…don’t the vast majority of them vote democrat no matter what?

  9. I for one feel its about time we had a moral discourse in America. In addition, I think that after 6 months of the media for berating Santorum for his views as well as being pro-Obama, people will grow sick of the bias and hear Santorum out. Possibly, he could even turn the tides of our crashing society by shifting what is normal conversation (ie keep G-d out of everything).

Discussing good and evil, discussing taboos like the roles of the sexes, abortion, gay marriage are no matter one’s views important societal conversation, not one’s that the media can just brush as extreme and taken out of the conversation.

As things are going, Santorum would be out of contention as early as 2016 because of how secularized and PC our society has become. It’s time we as a society have a grown up conversation and before becoming immune to morality like Europe. What should our society look like? What are our goals and now having figured them out let’s think how we can attain them?

Of those opposed, the number one is secular Jews. They don’t want to have anything talked about anything. Who cares. We as the frum community should be open to a conversation before our society starts viewing us (like in Israel and has already begun happening in the US too) as outdated nutbags whose beliefs and rights are secondary to more sophisticated folks.
