Two law enforcement officials said that when they apprehended the suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of Brian Thompson, chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, during an investors’ gathering, they found a notebook containing extensive plans for the shooting.

Officials stated that the notebook outlined attending a corporate function and executing an executive.

According to the officials, one excerpt read: “What do you do? You wack the C.E.O. at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It’s targeted, precise and doesn’t risk innocents.”

The deadly event took place in the early hours of December 4, as Mr. Thompson was arriving at a Hilton hotel on West 54th Street to begin preparations for the UnitedHealthcare investors’ meeting.

On Monday, authorities captured Mr. Mangione, 26, after an alert from a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who was prompted by a customer who recognized him.

Mr. Mangione, now facing a murder charge and held without the option of bail, is resisting transfer to New York. His lawyer, Thomas Dickey, commented, “He is contesting it,” on Tuesday. The legal process of moving him could be protracted.

Officials revealed that the suspect was in possession of a so-called “ghost gun,” a noise suppressor, and forged identity documents akin to those believed to have been used by the perpetrator. He also carried identification bearing his real name.

A senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the inquiry said that police matched Mr. Mangione’s fingerprints to those found on a water bottle and a snack wrapper recovered near the scene. Investigators also discovered his prints on ballistic items.

When apprehended, Mr. Mangione had a handwritten note of 262 words that appeared to begin by accepting responsibility for the killing, according to officials who described it as a manifesto. The note referred to the existence of a notebook, and CNN was the first outlet to report the recovery of that item.

An internal report by the New York Police Department summarized parts of a three-page manifesto found with him, suggesting he viewed the killing as a “symbolic takedown.” The report also stated that he “likely views himself as a hero of sorts who has finally decided to act upon such injustices” and expressed concern that others could regard him as a “martyr and an example to follow.”

Mr. Mangione grew up as part of a large and well-known Baltimore family and attended an elite high school there before going on to the University of Pennsylvania. He worked at several technology firms and maintained a long-standing interest in computer games.

In numerous posts on Reddit over multiple years, he described severe health issues that impacted his life. He mentioned worsening back pain until a surgery in 2023 and difficulties with “brain fog.” His only mention of insurance indicated that Blue Cross Blue Shield covered diagnostic tests for irritable bowel syndrome.

He ceased all communication with friends and relatives about half a year ago. Last month, his mother filed a missing-person report.
