Syria has accused Israel of aiding “terrorist groups” by firing missiles that hit near a military airport west of the capital early Friday. SANA, Syria’s state-run news agency, said several missiles launched from northern Israel landed near the Mezzeh military airport on the outskirts of Damascus, causing a fire in the area. It was unclear if there were casualties.

“The Syrian army command and armed forces warn the Israeli enemy of the repercussions of this blatant attack and stresses it will continue its war on terrorism,” the Syrian army said in a statement, adding it was the third such attack recently. The Mezzeh airport, which has been used to carry out attacks on rebel-held areas, has previously been targeted by groups opposing Bashar al-Assad’s regime. According to the Associated Press, residents of Damascus said several explosions shook the capital around the time of the alleged Israeli strikes. Separately, a suicide bomber reportedly killed eight people in a neighborhood known to house security installations. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least four of those killed were soldiers. Read more.
