Rising insulin costs are drawing outrage from diabetes advocates, leading to calls for greater transparency and federal oversight of the market for a drug that helps more than 7 million Americans.

Three companies — Eli Lilly, Sanofi and Novo Nordisk — control 99 percent of the world’s insulin, and advocates have been asking them to explain their pricing. According to the American Diabetes Association, the average price of insulin nearly tripled between 2002 and 2013.

The price for a vial of one the most popular insulin brands, Humalog, increased from $21 in 1996, to $35 in 2001, to $234 in 2015, to $275 in 2017. There are no generic forms of insulin on the market, but there are some cheaper “biosimilar” versions.

“Americans need Congress to take action to ensure a vibrant, competitive insulin market that serves consumers instead of drug company CEOs. Insulin is not a luxury. It is required for life,” said Ben Wakana, executive director of the advocacy group Patients for Affordable Drugs.

  1. But the sheeple here just love covering-up for the multi billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. No, this must be fake news. Pharma=good.
    Using your own brains=bad
Just go down like helpless sheep to get your almighty flu shot. Yup, just get the flu shot and you’ll never need any insulin. You can eat whatever you like, when you like. You can go to all the carnivals you want.

    • Would love to see the data correlation between flu shots and decreased need or use of insulin. Yes, both are inflammation related diseases and both will kill you, left untreated. I doubt there is a correlation between an annual flu shot and insulin dependence.
Acting irresponsibly is just that, being irresponsible. There is no known cure for stupidity or even a treatment plan. People who believe that they can buy a plan or a drug and not change their habits for lifestyle, well an IQ level hasn’t been designated (unless you consider politician a lower than moron IQ level). Justification for committing suicide by cholent – show me the teshuva.

    • pricing has nothing to do with efficacy! actually the fact that insulin treats diabetes but is being highly priced shows the opposite of what you claim because it actually is an effective treatment!

  2. It costed $21 in ’96, and now, 22 years later, it’s $275 – that’s well over TEN TIMES THE PRICE!!!In 22 years! Highway robbery.
