gsp-turnpikeThe New Jersey Turnpike been closed for hours following a crash and explosion of a tanker truck on the western spur in Carlstadt.

State Police say a fuel tanker filled with more than 8,000 gallons of gasoline collided with a minivan just before 9 p.m. Monday.

Police had closed all northbound lanes closed between Interchange 15 W in Kearny and the exit 18 W main toll plaza in Carlstadt.

Both northbound and southbound lanes will reopened in a few hours.

Two people suffered minor injuries. It is a minor miracle, given the size of the fire, that no one died.

One driver was able to get an intimate close up of the flames during the initial moments after the collision and recorded the fireball on a cell phone before state police shut down that section of the Turnpike.

Foam covered a large section of the roadway and what was left of the minivan and fuel tanker.

Police are still investigating.
