Media mogul Ted Turner reiterated an absolutely absurd idea Sunday.
Appearing at the International Women’s Earth and Climate Summit in New York City, Turner proposed “men be barred from political office. They could do everything else, be president of universities, business leaders, but they just couldn’t serve in any elected position for 100 years.”
Here is the exchange:
SALLY RANNEY, MODERATOR: There’s one other number that I want to put on the table here and that is that there is only 20 percent, 20 percent of the parliamentarians in the world are women. That’s another number that intersects here, and we have to get a lot more women into elected office. And I think, Ted, I remember you had a theory about women being elected.
TED TURNER: Well, I came up with the idea at least 20 years ago that we needed more women in politics. It would take a different turn. And I suggested that men be barred from political office. They could do everything else, be president of universities, business leaders, but they just couldn’t serve in any elected position for 100 years.
[Laughter and applause]
I think we’d have a lot more emphasis on education and healthcare and a lot less on Army and the Navy and the Marine Corps.

It would be a very positive step, but it hasn’t happened yet. But it still might. And then they just toss in the towel. They can’t come up with a budget.
RANNEY: That’s true.
We guess Turner was unaware that the House of Representatives led by Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) didn’t pass a budget for the fiscal years of 2010 or 2011.
Last I checked she is a woman.
For the record, this is not the first time Turner has made such a comment in public. He did so in 2003 and again in 2006.
At least he’s consistently foolish.

Anyone who follows Ted Turner knows that these types of comments are typical for him. he did not intend it as a serious proposal and the laughter in the transcript shows that the audience knew he was joking. Don’t take this so seriously.
Esteemed Edomite cousins, I have an idea. Perhaps you should consider barring humans from political office for 100 years. Did you already not have in office an equine senator back a while ago? Were you not mighty powerful back then? See, it makes perfect sense. And to its credit, I don’t think a horse would read aloud Dr Seuss.
