The Israel Airports Authority issued a public tender for the construction of a giant tent to handle departing passengers.

When the Terminal Threeflight departure terminal opened in 2004, it was expected to handle 16 to 18 million passengers yearly. But the number of departures is expected to jump to 20 million this year, an 18% increase over last year, and thirty percent more planes may be leaving the airport by 2018.

An Open Skies agreement signed with foreign airlines in 2012 subjected El Al to fierce competition and lowered the price of overseas flights and led to more people traveling overseas. Ben-Gurion plans to open a new departure wing next year with room for five more planes.
