Thanks Prez: Record-High Gas Prices Hit On Labor Day Weekend

Record-high gas prices do not seem to be putting the brakes on holiday getaways.

According to AAA, about 33 million people hit the road for the end-of-summer holiday weekend.

But there are high gas prices across the country and across the Tri-State Area.

Some drivers filling up in New Jersey said they’ve felt the sticker-shock.

“My sister has a van, she puts in 30 bucks…people aren’t really filling up nowadays. Not in my family, not that i know of. That fill-up, that 70 bucks in one shot is tough,” a Suffern, N.Y. resident told WCBS 88′s Paul Murnane.

But for some drivers, the New Jersey prices are better than what they’d get closer to home.

A man from the Bronx told Murnane he filled up his car in the Garden State before heading home.

“$33.37…but in the city, it would’ve been more than that,” the man said.

There are some tricks to watch out for to make sure you don’t get taken for a ride at the pump.

The superintendent of the Bergen County Office of Weights and Measures told the Bergen Record to compare prices on the pump with the price on the street sign, watch for creeping meters that continue to run even after the nozzle clicks off and keep your head up and keep and eye on the pump when filling up.

AAA estimated the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.82.
