Thanks to Anti-Vaxxers, More Cases of Measles in Lakewood

30

The New Jersey Department of Health is warning residents about at least two additional confirmed cases of measles — a highly contagious disease — who could have exposed others to the infection while in Ocean County between October 25 and 30. These individuals developed symptoms after being exposed to an individual who acquired measles while traveling internationally. The Department of Health is considering this an outbreak of measles in the community.

Anyone who visited the following locations may have been exposed to measles:

  • NPGS, 231 Main St, Lakewood, NJ 08701
    • October 25 between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
    • October 29 between 2:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.
  • Pizza Plus, 241 4th St, Lakewood, NJ 08701 on October 28 between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The Department is working in collaboration with the Ocean County Health Department to identify and notify people who might have been exposed during the time the individuals were infectious. In the event that additional exposure locations are identified, information will be updated on the Department’s measles page.

The Department urges residents to remain vigilant for any symptoms of measles. Measles symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Measles infection in a pregnant woman can lead to miscarriage, premature birth or a low-birth-weight baby. Measles is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.

The Department recommends that anyone who visited any of the locations listed above during the specified dates/times should contact a health provider immediately to discuss potential exposure and risk of developing the illness. If you have been exposed, you are at risk if you have not been vaccinated or have not had measles. Individuals potentially exposed, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as November 20.

Anyone who suspects an exposure is urged to call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department. Special arrangements can be made for evaluation while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection.

Anyone who has not been vaccinated or has not had measles is at risk if they are exposed. “Two doses of measles vaccine are about 97 percent effective in preventing measles,” said Dr. Christina Tan, state epidemiologist.

“We urge everyone to check to make sure they and their family members are up-to-date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and all other age-appropriate immunizations. Getting vaccinated not only protects you, it protects others around you who are too young to get the vaccine or can’t receive it for medical reasons. If you’re planning an international trip, the World Health Organization recommends that adults or adolescents unsure of their immune status get a dose of measles vaccine before traveling,” Dr. Tan added.

Before international travel:

  • Infants 6 through 11 months of age should receive one dose of MMR vaccine. Infants who get one dose of MMR vaccine before their first birthday should get two more doses (one dose at 12 through 15 months of age and another dose separated by at least 28 days).
  • Children 1 year and older should receive two doses of MMR vaccine, separated by at least 28 days.
  • Teenagers and adults who do not have evidence of immunity against measles should get two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days.

  1. lets hope a lesson is learned!! on the backs of these innocent toddlers. we are all guilty as a community for not crushing this meshugas when it began ashamnu ..bogadnu…
vaccines overide sholom bayis this is something worth making a fuss over

  2. This is outrageous
The administration of any school that allows unvaccinated children to attend classes need to be criminally charged,

  3. When the local frum pediatricians will refuse to see or to treat unvaccinated children, having them to resort to the ER, or to find likeminded naturalists and faith healers, then there will be some change.

  4. Misleading incitful slanderous headline. Nowhere in the article does it say those children were NOT vaccinated. Even if you say they takeh weren’t vaccinated, why do you say it’s because of the anti vaxxer community? Maybe the parents are not aware of such a “movement” and made the decision on their own? Is this an editorial opinion piece or are you reporting the news?

    • Oh come on! You are making a distinction without a difference. Whether the parents are anti-vaxxers or not, the results are the same: no measles vaccine, the child gets measles! Very simple to understand.

  5. 40% of people with measles here in Israel have been vaccinated so lets not just speak bad about people!!!

    • I am not going to ask you to verify those percentages, but will ask you only this – WAS YOUR CHILD VACCINATED? If not, continue to preach that measles is a perfectly normal childhood illness, and the child that just died, oh well, that happens with perfectly normal stuff…..

      • attached part of an artical from matzav :
Around 60% of those infected are charedi residents of Yerushalayim, many who are not vaccinated.
Where does it say all arent vaccine and just to let you know as a mother living here in Isreal I took my kids to get a vaccine and they arent giving it since THEY DONT HAVE ANY so noone can be blamed except for the health minister!!!

    • People wearing seatbelts sometimes die in car accidents.
People driving in cars with airbags sometimes die in accidents.
People driving under the speed limit sometimes die in accidents.
People swimming with lifeguards present sometimes drown.
People crossing the street carefully, in the crosswalk, with the green light, sometimes are struck.
Houses with alarm systems are sometimes robbed.
Doctors and hospitals sometimes make devastating mistakes.

Nonetheless, would anybody in their right mind suggest that people would be better off without all of the above, since they don’t offer perfect protection?

  6. Marc – Perhaps we can finally understand that yes, like you say, “IF all the frum pediatricians would refuse to treat the unvaxed” – ahhhh……could it be the reason they don’t all say to vax is because as physicians and people who have actually studied the inyan (not like 99% or the commenters on this site) they realize that there are some concerns about vaxing? Not everyone has to be called a rotzayach, say viduy and sacrifice their first born just because they dont want to vax. STOP THE HYSTERIA

And to those of you who are going to say “even if we can save 1 child” I ask you, are you just as vocal and concerned about texting and driving? Because that injures, mame’s and kills many more every month then measels affects in a decade. Maybe we should make a rule in all Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs that if any parent ever gets a ticket for talking or texting while driving their children will be sent out of the school. I promise you we will save more lives with that rule then the vax rule.

    Just stop the mass hysteria

  7. can someone please explain to me what is so terrible about rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red watery eyes!!!???
is it worth risking autism, cancer and lifelong allergies because of those symptoms?
The vaccine is no guarantee against measles! As the rate of vaccination went up in china, the rate of measles went up !!! 98% of the Chinese population was vaccinated and in 2014 there were 52,628 cases of measles. (Weston A. Price Foundation)
    Stop blaming the anti-vaxxiners!!
There is a concept called viral shedding. This means for after the vaccine is given until the antibodies are created there is a period of time when the condition is very catchy!!!
if measles lead to pneumonia and death then the host was simply nutrient deficient. Stop eating processed foods and feeding your children soy based and other poisoned formulas. make sure your vitamin and mineral levels are up to par and you will overcome these conditions easily.

The jews did not get affected by the deadly blach plague in the middle ages because they had better hygiene habits. they were not vaccinated against the black plague.
There are safer ways to help the body deal with these conditions.

    • All the symptoms you mention are external. Internally there is brain and joint inflammation leaving some children deaf, brain damaged or chalilah dead. Do you play Russian roulette that your child won’t develop these symptoms. The link of vaccination to autism was debunked numerous times with the author admitting in a court of law that he made the study up!! If you are going to quote things read it all the way through and don’t stop in middle to try and make a point!!

      • Wow. Tremendous insight. Such intelligence. Brilliant. You are someone who has an above average IQ. We would love to hear more of your opinions over here.

    • A. Rash, fever, watery eyes….. in addition to possible encephalitis with resultant permanent brain damage, heart damage, kidney failure. Right, nothing wrong.
      B. Jews DID get ill, and died of the bubonic plague, aka The Black Death, just as the goyim did. Whence the wrong information?
      C. Better hygiene? Try reading the Tosafos, where they write that since it’s our habit to bathe once in few months, there is no chiyuv to bathe one’s body on erev shabbos. As for lice, those simply feasted on Jews, as they did on all the others. Soapless rinsing of hands before partaking bread isn’t exactly hygiene.

    • The doctor who concocted the study that linked autism and the MMR vaccine admitted he purposely skewed the results to support his opinion. He has since been stripped of his medical license.
You’re worried about unproven side effects of the vaccine, but you neglect to consider the threat measles poses to the community. Measles can be fatal to individuals with compromised immune systems, the elderly, infants, and transplant recipients who are on anti rejection medications. Would you want to be the one whose children caused a kidney transplant recipient to c”v reject the kidney he waited years to receive?
As this outbreak has proven, relying on herd immunity doesn’t work. So stop being so selfish and vaccinate your kids before they c”v harm someone else or end up in the hospital themselves.

      • people think that side effects of vaccines are “unproven” Read the package insert. the vaccine companies themselves, including the cdc all say that there can be adverse effects from the vaccines. Do you think you know better than the vaccine manufacturers themselves? Of course there are adverse side effects to vaccines.!! Chas Veshalom no one should get it. There is an issue now that when a parent shows that not long after a vaccine something is off about the child, the doctor says it is a “coincidence”. The vaccine is infallible! It can do no wrong!

  8. Bottom Line Folks,
Nobody wants to say it but it’s a classic case of damned if you and damned if you don’t.
Everyone has to decide for themselves if it’s worth it or not….dangers both ways for any honest person who has actually researched the issue!! Anyone else is simply shooting from the hip (no pun intended).

    Have a gut shabbos!

  9. Thank you Enough for injecting some rational thought into a wholly emotional, irrational, hysterical herd diatribe. Duh, there are no risks involved in wearing a seatbelt – there are plenty involved with vaccinations. See vaccine inserts, VAERS, the CDC website; review the literature. Until then, DON’T TELL PARENTS TO SUBJECT THEIR HEALTHY CHILDREN TO RISKY MEDICAL INTERVENTION TO SUPPOSEDLY SAVE SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILD, you uneducated ignoramuses. And don’t call people rodfim – you know good and well that can incite violence. Shame on you.

  10. SO I AM MECHUYEV TO INJECT POISEN INTO MY CHILD BECAUSE OF UNPROVEN VACCINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????. NO ONE HAS YET PROVED THAT IT DOES ANYTHING.
