thanksgiving-turkeyThanksgiving Day may have started with the pilgrims’ feast, but it was President Abraham Lincoln who made a November day of thanks a national tradition.

In his Thanksgiving proclamation in 1863, Lincoln detailed the purpose of the holiday:

“The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. … I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens,” Lincoln wrote.

In that spirit, our question to you today: What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving?

  1. Shehechezarta bi nishmasi b’chemlah…Kol zman shehaneshamah bekirbi modeh ani lefonecha…al chayeinu hamesurim beyadecha v’al nishmoseinu hap’kudos lach v’al nisecha sheb’chol yom………

  2. I am thankful to HaShem to be alive, to have two loving parents, to not live in abject poverty, to be Jewish and have meaning in life, and to be, no braggadocio intended, intelligent.

  3. Turkey looks real good!!!
Having said that….for living in a country that allows me to practice my religion without fear…For the Health of my family and myself. For a roof over my head…(no..I’m a renter…but my mother used to say in response to my complaint that I missed the boat buying a house..”mommele…hust a dach iber dein kup?)For my beautiful children and the gift I am forever grateful for: my blessed GRANDCHILDREN.
May we all be zoicha to see the cup half full instead of half empty.Even the most suffering amongst us…have a lot to be grateful for.
Let us find the good Hashem has granted us and not be grumpy about what ails us.
“when you smile…the world smiles with you…when you cry…..” so don’t
    Happy Thanksgiving to all
    A Gut Shabbos.
    Be positive
    Enjoy life!

  4. I’m most thankful that I have a Shmoneh Esrey that I can thank HaShem three times a day, I have Birkas HaMazon in which I can thank HaShem for my meals, I have brochos in which I can thank Hashem at least 100 times a day, I have Yomim Tovim in which I can thank HaShem for the nissim and niflaos He has done for me, and many other avenues in which to express my thanks to HaShem. I thank HaShem for all the above so I don’t need another “Holiday” to express thanks.

  5. Although we all ployter on (as above posters have noted) about being thankful in various tefillas that we say every day how many of us REALLY focus on feelings of gratitude when we daven uhp these paragraphs? If merely knowing that there is a day set aside by the Americaners will motivate us to have ONE day where we actually MEAN the thanks that we give to HKB”H then I am thankful for….Thanksgiving Day!

  6. Focus on Birchas Hoda’ah (“Modim anachnu lach”) in Shemoneh Esrei three times a day (or more), and don’t get wrapped around a gyish (commercialized) holiday devoted to gashmiyus, that occurs once a year.
