On Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., sharply criticized both former President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk for their efforts to undermine the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), accusing Trump of initiating steps toward establishing a dictatorship.

Omar, alongside other Democratic lawmakers, gathered outside the USAID office in Washington, D.C., denouncing the attempts by Trump and Musk to dismantle independent agencies like USAID, claiming that these efforts were aimed at reducing wasteful spending but could potentially undermine the agency’s essential functions.

“It is a really, really sad day in America. We are witnessing a constitutional crisis,” Omar expressed. “We talked about Trump wanting to be a dictator on day one. And here we are. This is what the beginning of dictatorship looks like when you gut the Constitution, and you install yourself as the sole power. That is how dictators are made.”

Omar went on to accuse Trump, Musk, and their associates of trying to strip Congress of its constitutional authority to allocate funding, arguing that these actions are dangerous for the democratic system.

Over the weekend, sources reported that fifty senior staff members at USAID were placed on administrative leave. Furthermore, these staff members were reportedly restricted from communicating with anyone outside the agency without prior approval.

Omar expressed her outrage, noting her personal connection to the agency. Having spent part of her childhood in a refugee camp, she recalled how USAID provided essential programs that helped keep her family fed and safe during those years.

“Privileged billionaires who don’t give a damn about America and Americans should not be making decisions that put Americans at harm,” she stated. “And a billionaire that hasn’t been vetted has not gone through confirmation, has not been elected by the American people who we still do not understand what in the world he’s doing should not be telling American employees that they cannot access the building they work at.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., also weighed in, reminding Musk that USAID was created by Congress, not by him.

“Just like Elon Musk did not create USAID, he doesn’t have the power to destroy it. And who’s going to stop him? We are!” Raskin declared. “We’re going to stop him. Elon Musk, you may have illegally seized power over the financial payment systems of the United States Department of Treasury, but you don’t control the money of the American people. The United States Congress does that under Article One of the Constitution.”

While lawmakers voiced their criticism outside the USAID building, Musk responded with a social media post.

“The corrupt politicians ‘protesting’ outside the USAID building are the ones getting money from USAID,” Musk wrote on X. “That’s why they’re there – they want your stolen tax dollars!”

As left-wing lawmakers condemned the changes at USAID, Republican hardliners supported what they viewed as necessary reforms to the agency’s operations.

USAID, an independent government agency, is responsible for providing civilian foreign aid, which supports global development, combats poverty and disease, and promotes democracy abroad. However, conservatives argue that the agency has strayed from its original mission, and many have called for substantial cuts to its multi-billion-dollar budget.

For example, the White House pointed out that $1.5 million was allocated to USAID to promote diversity and inclusion in Serbia’s workplaces and business sectors, while $2 million went to Guatemala to fund sex-change operations and LGBTQ activism. Additionally, $6 million was reportedly used for tourism funding in Egypt, and some of the agency’s funds were even directed to meals for fighters affiliated with al Qaeda in Syria.

“USAID is a corrupt governmental organization run by unelected bureaucrats created to shovel taxpayer dollars to Democrats’ pet projects overseas,” said Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., speaking to Fox News Digital.

“At nearly $37 trillion in national debt – and a $1.8 trillion annual deficit – we can’t afford to continue giving money to countries that hate America and everything we stand for,” Biggs continued.

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., also voiced his support for cutting USAID’s funding, claiming that closing the agency would help reduce the national debt and relieve taxpayers, while encouraging countries that depend on aid to become self-reliant.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement on X, indicating that USAID had “long strayed” from its intended purpose of advancing American interests abroad. The statement further claimed that significant portions of the agency’s funding were no longer aligned with national priorities.

“As an interim step toward gaining control and better understanding over the agency’s activity, President Donald J. Trump appointed Secretary Marco Rubio as Acting Administrator,” the statement read. “Secretary Rubio has also now notified Congress that a review of USAID’s foreign assistance activities is underway with an eye towards potential reorganization. As we evaluate USAID and ensure it is in alignment with an America First agenda and the efforts of the State Department, we will continue to protect the American people’s interests and ensure their tax dollars are not wasted.”
