amos-bunimKlal Yisroel has lost one of its most unique and devoted members with the passing of Rabbi Amos Bunim z”l. Rabbi Bunim had been feeling unwell for the last few months and passed away over Shabbos.

Reb Amos, himself a remarkable and inspiring individual, was a son of the legendary Mr. Irving M. Bunim zt”l, noted lay leader of Orthodox Jewry, in particular the Vaad Hatzolah effort following World War II and the Young Israel movement in the United States from the 1930s until his passing in 1980. As the trusted assistant to Maran Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, Irving was deeply involved in all aspects of Torah dissemination, philanthropy and Holocaust rescue. In 1989, Reb Amos, who closely assisted his father numerous times and served as his yad yemin, authored “A Fire in His Soul” about the life of his father. He also directed a fascinating documentary about the life and efforts of his father.

Reb Amos, a prominent Torah activist, had a kesher and shaychus with numerous gedolim and was a staunch protector of Torah and Yiddishkeit, following in the footsteps of his legendary father. Reb Amos was counted amongst the most trusted confidantes of Rav Aharon Kotler and maintained a close relationship with Bais Medrash Govoah – among countless other mosdos haTorah v’hachesed – throughout his life. Reb Amos saw the image of his legendary father in everything he did and, like his father, served many times as a faithful emissary of the gedolim.

A resident of Far Rockaway, NY, and later Lawrence, NY, Reb Amos was a pioneer and leader of those respective communities, serving as a founder of its most respected Torah institutions, including Torah Academy for Girls (TAG) and Yeshiva Sh’or Yoshuv.

Reb Amos was indeed unique in that he was an askan par excellence, but was also a talented orator and author, a talmid chochom of note, a humble baal chessed, and a maggid shiur, among many other qualities he possessed.

Reb Amos was predeceased by his devoted wife, Mrs. Sarah Bunim a”h, and later married his wife Lottie, nee Wallerstein.

Reb Amos is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Rivkah Winter, wife of Rabbi Kalman Winter, Director of Vaad Harabonim of Washington and rov of Southeast Jewish Congregation; and Mrs. Mina Glick, wife of Rabbi Shimmy Glick.

The levaya will take place at 9:15 a.m. at Bais Medrash Govoah, located at 617 Sixth Street in Lakewood, NJ, followed by a levaya at 1:45 p.m. at Yeshiva Sho’r Yoshuv, located at 1 Cedar Lawn Avenue in Lawrence, NY.

The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah on Har Hazeisim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. OY! Baruch Dayan HaEmes. Ill never forget his Yom Kippur davening! Im sure he wont stop being an “activist” and a Maelitz Yosher for Klal Yisrael. Yehi Zichro Baruch

  2. Baruch Dayan Haemes. It’s a huge loss to the entire Jewish World. I remember R’ Amos being the M.C. For the kinnus teshuva in Darchei Torah a few years ago.

  3. At least ten years ago, our small out-of-town yeshiva high school received a check for $18 from R’ Amos. We certainly knew a great deal about him and respected him, but we were unaware that he had even heard of our existence. Why did he send that check? I suspect that he went through the Torah U’Mesorah catalog of mosdos haTorah and sent checks to every one. Not because the $18 would make that much of a difference, but because it would be mechazek us knowing that such a great man cared…and because Shulchan Aruch states that it’s better to give lots of small donations to many mosdos than one big one.
