doritosDear Editor,

A Doritos ad? With a flying pig? This we need to see?

On a “Jewish news” site, readers expect to see some Jewish connection in featured items, even in the ads, and do not expect to be subjected to advertising of products (with dubious hechsherim, at best) that feature animals prohibited to us.

We generally enjoy your website above any similar Jewish news site and visit it daily.

Thank you.

  1. Some Doritos have an OU hechsher, so please be more careful before you write. Regarding the animal, Rashi says Moshe Rabeinu showed Klal Yisrael the non-kosher animals, including the one and only animal that has split hooves but doesn’t chew its cud. According to your reasoning, no frum yid should ever go to the zoo. G-d forbid that we see a non-kosher animal! Get a life.

  2. I agree.
I also object to some of the videos that you post. Not because they lack in tznius but because the promote dangerous activities (i.e: the stunts that you have shown kids performing with their bikes) or because the pock fun at people’s misery (i.e: the old lady being hit by a soccer ball). In my opinion this is a lack of midos and sensitivity.
I have written to you in the past asking: if a Rav had been shown these types of videos. I am sure that a respectable Rav or mechanics would not be in favor of posting these types of videos.

  3. I certainly share the feeling, and especially so when good kosher comments are deemed “unfitting” to post, which are totally ok…

  4. Dear R.B.
While you may make a valid point, I politely disagree, because I enjoyed this video immensely. Growing up a diehard football fan, I looked forward to the Super Bowl each year, whether my team was in it or not, because each advertizer put their best foot forward, and the results were entertaining and insightful. What is the latest that they’ve figured out get the general public to spend our money? Now that i’ve grown up and BH my priorities have grown along with me, it still saddens me that I cannot watch the commercials because of the decadence of society and the new lows that companies will sink to get people to buy their products. But if there is a ‘kosher’ ad, (who cares if you’ll eat the product or that they used pigs- see, I said it!) why not give me the enjoyment of watching a brilliantly scripted clip? I can’t imagine it caused any good Jewish boy or girl who is makpid not to eat “dubious” hechsherim to run and buy Doritos!
    Reespectfully, Tzvi
    Hatzlacha v’chol tuv!

  5. im impressed that you took time from your precious schedule of doing holy things to watch a video and then write a letter to matzav. you must have felt this was highly highly highly important.
    lol

  6. There were two aspects to my objection. 1)We have come to expect a “featured video” to be something of particular interest to the Jewish community, even if it is an advertisement in entertainment form. If this ad was announcing that doritos now has a heimishe hechsher, then ok it would be of Jewish interest (but we would question the advertising agency for its animal of focus then) 2) We have come to expect that on a frum Jewish site we will not be confronted with images of things which (while permissible to eat or see) we have chosen to avoid in our daily lives. Yes, I do take my kids to the zoo. I choose to do so. I also choose to read Matzav because I do not want to see ads for products or animals I don’t want to eat. So you may say, well, then, choose not to click on the video. The point is, I choose to read Matzav so that I don’t have to pick and choose among its items! True, I should not have cast aspersions on the hechsher without checking it out first, but I haven’t looked at doritos in years and don’t remember them being the most kosher snack on the block. Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion.

  8. Every adult surely knows to check hechsherim, and flying pigs are almost as funny as flying chickens, even chickens with a plumba. However, if the comment re:unacceptable videos is correct, I would agree that one showing a soccer ball hitting an old woman (I’m assuming that was meant to be a comic video) ought not to be shown on this site. Sacrificing essential principles for a laugh, no matter how tempting, is wrong. It’s a struggle these days to maintain Torah standards, including that of respect, for people, and especially for older people, and we shouldn’t give in to the atmosphere of azut and chutzpah. Even though we are immersed in 21st century culture, we have to resist the worst of its influence. Compassion and Derech Eretz are easily eroded. We all need to be more careful regarding “Lifnei seiva…”

  9. This person’s comment means that they never go to non Jewish stores – never travel – never use the internet. As I recall one has ‘free choice’ as the person commented previously – ever go to a zoo, dogs and cats are not kosher how do you walk in the street – get a life.

  10. This self righteous writer needs to either grow up or stop being a hypocrite. Anyone that is on the internet, one way or another comes across something that is not Hashkafacally in line with what they preach. Most of us just shrug and move on. Those that make a Shtink, are either guilty of far worse or plain childish. Kol Haposeil, Bemoumoi Poisel.

  11. This is simply unfair. RB expressed his opinion politely (while those who objected did not necessarily use the kindest language) and he made some valid points. RB I respect you for your courage. Truth be told, I too, have been disappointed at times, and so, I am putting up a stricter filter and hope to block matzav soon.
And no, neither I, nor RB, I believe, feel or think that we are some “great tzaddikim”. Why, the great tzaddikim don’t visit matzav at all. None of us are perfect, and yet I see nothing wrong with striving for perfection in serving HKB”H. And I see nothing wrong with respecting those who are or strive to be more than you instead of knocking them down.

  12. this must me a hack and not serious. It is not avoda zora and therefore we may look at it. We are not muslims here and we are are not afraid of pigs. we just can’t eat them. that is all

  13. This p’i’g was the boys’ pet, not a portion of h’a’m. Like having a dog.
Then again, the Chinese eat dogs.
Then again, what are you doing altogether on the “intervesh”?

  14. Matzav doesn’t have a comment section for all the video’s they show. What are they afraid of? Felling a little guilty?

  15. to the one that said Chinese eat dogs I demand an apology immediately! – the Chinese eat rats, its the Koreans that eat dogs. (read the excellent true story (Go my Son) by Chaim Shapiro, ZTL)

  16. Wether you agree to his point or not, there is a very big inyan brought down in numerous seforim not to look at non-kosher animals and other devarim shel tumah. And there actually are teshuvos about going to the zoo. (And yes, I know there are more important issues, but that doesnt make his point invalid)

  17. guys, please remember that we are all am yisrael when you comment.

I personally had no problem with the ad, but I accept that we all have different standards and everyone is entitled to make their own choices.

  18. to ????: if it were “when cows fly,” I could still object on the grounds that an advertisement for a product with no particular connection to the Jewish community should not have the favored status of a “featured video” (as opposed to any other ad) and on the grounds brought up by another poster that strapping rockets onto non-volunteer and possibly unsuspecting animals who are almost certain to die upon landing (or while airborne)is a violation of tzar baalei chaim. but since I kind of enjoy looking at cows, there might not have been a confluence of factors moving me to write about it. thank you for asking.

  19. RB IS AHUNDRED PEH-SENT RIGHT! GOYIM EAT CHOLOV STAM AND OU AND ALSO GOYIM WEAR BOBBY PINS ON THIER YARMULKAS AND ALSO WEAR SHAITELS… AND USE ILEGAL PURIM SHTICK!!
