It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rebbetzin Miriam Devorah Shapiro a”h, wife of the Naroler Rebbe, Rav Berish Shapiro. She was 79 and passed away at Maimonides Medical Center in Boro Park, Brooklyn.

The Rebbetzin’s grandson, a son of her daughter and son-in-law, the Koidinover Rebbe, is slated to get married tonight at Ganei Hadekel Hall in Bnei Brak.

The Rebbetzin was born in New York in 1933, a daughter of the Kozolover Rebbe, Rav Moshe Rokeach, and Rebbetzin Shlomtze, and lived on the Lower East Side and then Crown Heights. Her family later resettled in Boro Park.

In 1957, she married her husband, Rav Berish, a son of the Naroler Rebbe, Rav Chaim meir Yechiel. The Rebbetzin, like her husband, was a descendant of the Sar Shalom of Belz. The Shapiros first loved in Crown Heights and then resettled, in 1979, in Flatbush, and Rav Berish served as menahel of Boro Park’s Belzer Yeshiva, while leading his bais medrash in Flatbush.

She served as a devoted right hand to her husband, who leads his kehillos in Flatbush and Eretz Yisroel.

She leaves behind her husband, the Naroler Rebbe, her two brothers, and doros yeshorim, including her children, Rav Aharon Shapiro, Rav Tzvi Zalman Shapiro, Rav Avrohom Shapiro of Boro Park, Rav Asher Shapiro of London, and her daughters, Rebbetzin Sarah Rubin, Rebbetzin Chaya Bracha Ehrlich, and Rebbetzin Tzina Michelowitz of Monsey.

The levayah will begin at the Belzer Talmud Torah of in Park before continuing at the Naroler Bais Medrash in Flatbush. The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel, where a levayah will be held at the Naroler Bais Medrash in Bnei Brak and kevurah will be held on Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim tomorrow.

Yehi zichrah boruch.

  1. Being that the Levaya will take place at 1:45 in Brooklyn it is probably more accurate that the Levaya will take place Thursday afternoon which means that the Chasunne can proceed with everyone in attendance as long as nobody runs around showing Matzav’s post.
