In the weeks leading up to Pesach, Oneg Shabbas V’Yom Tov kicks into overdrive and expands its operations by organizing a massive Kimcha D’Pischa giveaway in both Yerushalayim and Beit Shemesh, where over 10,000 food packages – each one valued at $300 – are distributed to poor families.
Rechov Shmuel Hanavi, situated in Yerushalayim’s Shivtei Yisroel neighborhood, is transformed into an open air market, combining the essence of chessed with the mitzvah of Kimcha D’Pischa.
The street is blocked off and boxes are displayed in rows that run along the asphalt. Jews from all backgrounds pass by with creaky wagons and load them to the brim with cases of wholesome food.
Thousands of cases of grape juice for Kiddush and Arba Kosos are handed out. Matzos, fish, meat, eggs, potatoes, fresh fruits, vegetables and so much more are distributed. These packages light up the homes of the impoverished; this is what enables them to usher in the Yom Tov of Pesach with joy. The smiles and happiness are apparent on the faces of the recipients, as they carry home their prized possessions.
From year to year, the Oneg Shabbas V’Yom Tov campaign grows in size – and this year, a record amount of cartons are expected to be distributed to thousands of poor families in Eretz Yisroel.
The only thing more impressive than this massive Kimcha D’Pischa giveaway for over 10,000 families is the unique Atzeres HaTefillah – which is led by the Gedolei Hador of Eretz Yisroel – that takes place simultaneously in the exact same spot.
