Everything through the eyes of halacha: Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman, Rosh Yeshivas Rashbi, was visited by Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen, rov of Khal Ateres Yeshaya in Lakewood, NJ, who penned a psak permitting Rav Bergman to attend tomorrow’s Adirei Hatorah event despite sitting shivah for his son.
As first reported on Matzav Status, Rav Bergman will address the Adirei HaTorah event this Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia despite recent events.
This past week, after the tragic and untimely petirah of Rav Meir Tzvi’s son, Rav Ezriel Bergman zt”l, at the age of 70, rumors spread that Rav Meir Tzvi would not attend the Adirei HaTorah event. These reports were unfounded.
Despite sitting shivah, Rav Meir Tzvi, for this unique maamad of kavod haTorah, will be’ezras Hashem participate.
The psak written by Rav Cohen, a noted posek and the author of renowned sifrei halacha, was directed to Rav Cohen’s brother-in-law, Rav Shlomo Lesin, who is a close yad yemin of Rav Bergman.
Rav Cohen writes that he discussed the issue with noted posek Rav Bentzion Kook. The outcome of their conversation, obtained by Matzav.com, was that Rav Bergman should attend, with the following restrictions:
1) Rav Bergman will remain in a separate close-off section.
2) He may sit on a regular chair.
3) He may deliver brief divrei chizuk and mussar.
4) He will not be welcomed with music and singing, but it can be announced that Rav Bergman has arrived for kavod haTorah.
5) After the drasha, Rav Bergman will depart the arena.
6) If possible, Rav Bergman should begin his drasha by stating that since the event is a very important one to be mechazeik bnei Torah, it is permitted for him to take part even during shivah.
The psak:

Number 1. Is not correct.
If you read the Hebrew it says he has to keep off leather shoes and keep his torn clothing
why does Rav Bergman need another rabbi to give him a psak,he is one of the Gedolim he knows the Halacha himself
It is well known that Rav Chaim Brisker would not passenger, but rather sent all questions of halachah to Rav Simcha Zelig Reguer, dayan in Brisk.
Rav Chaim Brisker did not pasken, leaving that to the Dayan of Brisk, Rav Simcha Zelig.
Give the venerated Rav his space & time to mourn the terrible loss of his Beloved Son in peace & dignity, and reschedule this event for a week later.
Your first point is correct. However the event cabbot be rescheduled
Cannot
Hagaon Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman does not need to come on to a psak from someone else!
Does Reb Meir Zvi really need any of us Americans to pasken on something which he already paskened on Himself?
What a lesson for all!
Even the ראש ישיבה שליט”א sought and received psak from a posek.
Only one in a thousand are capable of being a posek.
Those who feel because they are talmidei chochmim they can pasken should take heed.
I received a call but they hung up before I could answer.
During the week of mourning of the shocking sudden death of his son, how does he have the emotional strength to attend the event?
I was there before Rabbi Kohn walked in and when he walked in with his “paper” as well, and so were a few others.
Reb Meir Zvi explained to us in clear terms why he’s obligated to attend although he’s in middle of Shiva – not for this post. He had a very highly reasoning why and what. This is יורה דעה – all you need is a יחיד מומחה’s direction…… If Reb Zvi doesn’t qualify as a יחיד מומחה, then anyone else on the planet certainly does not fit the criteria for that – obviously.
Totally unnecessary for this ridiculous paper – directive – to be given to the זקן ראש הישיבות. Outright pathetic.
Unsure what the motive is, but this is what I saw with my own two eyes.
The program organisers are well aware of this, but it’s too late – don’t wanna be מזלזל in Rabbi Kohn. This should not have happened in the first place.
If we were all able to be מכיר את מקומו, then this would’ve all never happened.
Utterly insane, oh well.
So why are you mezalzel?
Better to use Zoom?
I can’t believe some of these comments. why he has to ask another posek? To me its obvious he’s a נוגע בדבר. Second if he would’ve pskened for himself to go you would have people questioning with silly comments, like how is allowed to go during shiva. I know a well adom godol whose mother was nifteres 2 days before his son’s wedding Although he knew he was allowed to go he sent emissaries to two other poskim to get it in writing so no should question him.
