It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of the Pupa Rebbetzin, Rebbetzin Miriam Greenwald a”h. She was 100 years old.

The Rebbetzin was the wife of the Vayechi Yosef of Pupa, Rav Yosef Greenwald.

The rebbetzin was born in 1918 in Vodkart, Hungary, a daughter of Rav Yissochor Ber and Chana Weber.

After World War II, the rebbetzin married Rav Yosef, whose first wife and family had perished in the war. Rav Yosef and the rebbetzin first lived in Europe and later relocated to the United States, settling in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where Rav Yosef opened a bais medrash, while also establishing a kehillah in Ossining, NY. Rav Yosef passed away 25 years ago.

As reported earlier on Matzav.com, the first day of Yom Tov, the news reached Williamsburg that the 100-year-old rebbetzin was rushed to the hospital. On Motzoei Shabbos, following the Seder, which ended at 5 a.m., news arrived that the situation of the rebbetzin was critical and that a quick decision had to be made as to whether to perform an emergency operation or not. The present Pupa Rebbe, Rav Yaakov Yechezkiya Greenwald, traveled together with his brother, Rav Aharon Greenwald, dayan of Pupa, to the hospital and returned before davening.

The rebbetzin‘s situation deteriorated since then and she passed away today.

The levayah will take place at 8 p.m. at the Pupa Bais Medrash in Williamsburg, followed by kevurah in Ossining, NY.
