The famous adage says “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” For one family, it’s even simpler than that. All it takes is one back surgery.

Up until 2016, Elazar Weissfish was an excellent husband and father. He’s had back pains since he was 17, but surgery as a young adult allowed him to live a normal life for many years. He had a parnassah and spent a lot of time with his kids. In 2016, his pains began to return. Within a short period, he was confined to a wheelchair. Today, the excruciating pain is literally 24/7. He needs help with everything because for him to move his arms even slightly, the pain is equivalent to being tortured. Even when he doesn’t move his limbs, he is still in chronic pain. Although he is alive, he no longer has a life.

His wife Zelda is in distress. She can no longer work because he needs her help full time to get him dressed, be fed, go to the bathroom and to be driven to never ending appointments. The various treatments and surgeries have eaten up their entire life savings and they are on the verge of starvation.

They were recently told that a particular surgery can cure her husband and bring him back to “Life”. He will then be able to support his family with dignity, shower his family with the love he wants to give them, and return to being the Torah role model his kids badly need. The good news ends there because there is no money for the operation. Without paying up front, the family’s situation will deteriorate until it’s too late. Money is the only obstacle. Helping this family fulfills many Torah mitzvos at once, including less obvious ones, and will bring great reward to its performers.
