It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of zekan ha’admorim, the Skulener Rebbe, Rav Yisroel Avrohom Portugal zt”l.
The rebbe was one of the oldest admorim in the world.
The rebbe passed away at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. He was transferred there earlier this winter from New York. His condition deteriorated this afternoon and he was niftar a short while ago.
The rebbe was a son of Rav Eliezer Zusia Portugal zt”l, who founded the Sklulener chassidus.
The rebbe resided in Boro Park, Brooklyn, where he led his bais medrash on 54th street, near 13th avenue.
In 1959 the Communists arrested Rav Eliezer Zusia and his son, the rebbe, for teaching Torah and for supporting and educating orphans. An international effort to free the previous rebbe and his son was undertaken, and eventually, through the intervention of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, the previous rebbe and his son were freed and immediately immigrated to the United States in 1960.
The rebbe continued his father’s holy work, leading his chassidus and running the Chesed L’Avraham organization to help the needy in Eretz Yisroel.
The Levayah will take place tomorrow in Boro Park at 11 a.m in front of 13th Avenue and 54th Street. 52nd Street to 61st Street from 12th to 16th Avenue will be completely closed. The levaya will then continue to Monsey, New York, where the kevura will take place at the Vizhnitz Bais Hachaim near where his father, the previous Rebbe is buried.
