The US Coast Guard has revealed that the Titan submersible, which was carrying five individuals including two billionaires, suffered a devastating collapse during its expedition to observe the remains of the Titanic. This catastrophic event led to the immediate loss of all passengers’ lives. The wreckage remnants found on the ocean floor were consistent with a severe rupture of the pressure chamber, indicating that the submersible had been crushed under the immense pressure of the sea after losing contact with its surface vessel on Sunday.

The US Coast Guard officials disclosed that five significant fragments from the OceanGate vessel were discovered approximately 1,600 feet away from the 1912 shipwreck. The exact cause and timing of the implosion remain unknown, as the submersible descended to a depth of 12,500 feet below the ocean surface.

Addressing the recovery prospects for the bodies, the Coast Guard expressed their inability to provide a definitive answer, emphasizing the challenging and unforgiving nature of the ocean’s depths when it comes to searching and retrieving debris.

Reportedly, a remotely operated vehicle identified a landing frame and a rear cover belonging to the missing submersible. The passengers on board the vessel included British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Sulaiman. Coast Guard Capt. Jamie Frederick extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the crew members.

The US First Coast Guard District confirmed the discovery of debris on Thursday afternoon. They reported that a remotely operated vehicle, an unmanned undersea probe, had found various fragments from the Titan, including the nosecone and the front end bell of the vessel’s pressure hull. Rear Admiral John Mauger stated that a debris field had been located near the Titanic, with another smaller debris field found within it by Odysseus 6K, an ROV produced by Pelagic Research Services based in Massachusetts. The Odysseus 6K was deployed from the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic.

The Coast Guard emphasized that the evaluation of the debris and the gathered information was still ongoing.

Renowned rescue expert David Mearns, who had been in contact with individuals close to some of the victims, stated that the recovered debris included a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible. Mearns, who had personal connections with billionaire Harding and Nargeolet, explained that the rear cover represented the pointed end of the unconventional submarine, while the landing frame served as its support structure. This discovery confirmed the identity of the submersible. Mearns, also known as the “shipwreck hunter,” further mentioned that the submersible’s hull remained missing, suggesting that the vessel had fragmented, leading to its implosion.

The search for the five individuals on board came to an end with the discovery of debris on the ocean floor, concluding the intense search efforts that began when the submersible was reported missing by the crew of the Polar Prince, the ship from which it had been launched.

OceanGate informed the Coast Guard that the Titan had only 96 hours of oxygen supply when it submerged near Newfoundland, initiating a race against time to locate the vessel and its five occupants, who were sealed inside with 17 bolts. Initial speculation suggested that the submersible might have become trapped within the Titanic wreckage but remained intact at a depth of 12,500 feet with dwindling air reserves.

Operating at such extreme depths is a rare capability, limited to only a few vessels. Two remotely operated vehicles, the Victor 6000 aboard the ship L’Atalante under French authorities and the Odysseus 6K on Horizon Arctic, were dispatched to the Titanic wreck site located 350 nautical miles from Newfoundland.

Less than two hours after the submersible was reported to have depleted its oxygen, the US Coast Guard confirmed that the Odysseus had reached the ocean floor, intensifying the frantic search.

“The Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic has deployed an ROV that has reached the sea floor and began its search for the missing sub,” announced the Coast Guard. They also mentioned that L’Atalante would soon deploy its own ROV.

Upon learning about the implosion of the Titan, OceanGate released a statement paying tribute to the victims, acknowledging them as true explorers who possessed a distinctive spirit of adventure and a profound dedication to exploring and preserving the world’s oceans. The company expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and the joy these individuals brought to everyone who knew them, extending their condolences to the grieving families during this tragic period.
